Feedback & Support (3rd Update)
First of all, kudos to all those who contribute and take an active role in GamersGlobal! Your support, feedback and your enthusiasm is very much appreciated.
As promised, here's a quick update on what's next on our to-do list: We'll
tweak the User Roles
- do some design work
add additional functions to the site
- fix bugs you report
over the next few days.
So keep an eye on this thread to stay up to date and let us know when support is needed, or when you have ideas for GamersGlobal.com.
Update: User Roles, EXP settings and some functions have been tweaked, based on your feedback and what we're seeing so far. Here's the low down:
New User Roles and their settings:
- Contributor (50 EXP required): Get access to a click counter, so that you know how many times your news has been read.
Author Role deleted
- Reporter (300 EXP required): Edit and update all news -- similar to Wikipedia. Changes create a new revision, so that previous versions may be restored by Editors/Mods/Admins. Get access to the advanced search.
- Editor (1000 EXP required): Add images to all news. Moderate news revisions.
Other additions:
- Added hints to the Create Content -> News section, to give additional information on how to write and format your news.
- Fixed CSS compatibility issues on IE7 and Opera 9.24+ (removed overflow:auto tags)
- "New" sidebar on the front page redone. Now has 20 instead of 10 "New" items to help avoiding dupes and to reduce the amount of fine-print content on the front page.
- Added a fluffy cloud, made of tags.
- Added Workflows for news, displaying a msg at the top if required.
- Click your name in the blue user-box to keep track of you postings.
More on this, as it happens. Enjoy and leave some feedback.
btw. you may now use the little # in the comments to anchor/direct link a posting.
since there is already an user management present, it would be nice to have some sort of mark which articles you have already read (kind of like in a forum)
There are two ways to keep track of this:
(1) New content is always underlined in the color of its respective section. Click a headline and you'll notice the underscore is gone.
(2) Use the "Track" function in your user profile. It tells you what you've posted, commented on and when new content has been added.
Hope that helps.
Thanks I somehow missed it(1). Maybe a "Mark all as read" link?
Shouldn't there be an option to delete my own news and comments? Or am I just blind? Happened to make a double post, because I didn't check it via search for the first time.
Furthermore, how could we check on duplicity? Maybe compare the tags and notify the author, when they are matching with a another article to a certain extend?!
Deleting own posts: Well, we thought about this as well and came to the conclusion, that we'll reserve this capability for Mods and Admins.
Dupes: Well, that's a though one. Currently there is no smart way to accomplish this in an easy and comprehensible fashion. But I'm looking into having some kind of "live search" function to list similar content on-the-fly before you start submitting it.
the www.xdsl.at forum does a live search (probably by ajax) in the background with the words you have entered for the title and informs you (actually gives you the link to the search result) befor you post.
My validation e-mail:
Welcome !username,
Feel free to look around and try things out at !site.
IMPORTANT: To start posting and editing news, we need you to verify this e-mail address. You may do so by clicking on the following link or copying and pasting it in your browser:
Verification: !login_url
This is a one-time login, so it can be used only once. If you choose to ignore this verification request, please be aware that we may delete unverified accounts in the future.
Kind regards,
-- The !site Admins
What should I do?
Validated your account. Enjoy.
hi.
is there some kind of memberlist around? *g
and perhaps it would be nice to have some sort of "internal" forum for all validated members for chit-chat and stuff
tEmP
For reasons which cannot all be easily explained, we do not want to have a forum very soon. But we definitely plan on giving registered users some goodies apart from the user roles' capabilities. A memberlist is a good idea, I think.
On Opera 9.24 and 9.5Beta the news item "New Starcraft 2 Unit presented" on the index has a horizontal slide bar
Hmm, yeah. That's due to a CSS overflow fix I'm using. Guess I'll have to replace it sometime soon.
I have a question and I don't know where else to ask it.
When you give points to an article, what exactly do you rate?
You're at the right place :)
Currently it's meant to be a sum of all those. We've placed the points in the bottom line of the respective posting cause we'd like readers to have a look at the content first. It's the opposite of what sites like reddit or digg are doing, where the rating is placed in front of the headline -- indicating that it's the topic that counts.
The use of "points" will be up for further extension in the future, like awarding users EXP when their content reaches a certain amount of points.
Adding a point also triggers the news to show up in the "Votes" section of your profile, so that you may keep track of things that interest you.
So basically I don't have to think about rating a lot, just listen to my stomach and klick, right? :D
Right :)
am I the only one who hates to type [brackets]* for the tags?
I would love it if you could substitute it with something simpler like say surrounding a word with *asterisks* to make it bold and maybe to make a list bullet out of every line which starts with an #hash#.
Or maybe a WYSIWYG editor?
Please! The current way of formatting is annoying me.
*dont confuse with (parantheses)
//edit
Also please shorten the "wikipedia" tag to "wiki"
I presume you're talking about formatting your comments, right? If so, then I've got to admit that the current solution is indeed uncomfortable for that specific purpose. But: Formatting comments isn't really intended -- it's merely a bonus. We do have kind of a "wysiwyg editor lite" for publishing content such as news. It gives you access to tags per click and I thought some folks might find it nice to have the same syntax available for their comments, so I enabled it. Most ppl, I presumed, will never ever use it though.
Actually, when we initially started GG, we disallowed tags in comments and news had to written in <HTML>. So you see, we've come a long way already and I don't see us stopping now :)
Of course, keep goin!
I haven't written a news entry yet. I would love to, but I can't see how I could come up with actual fresh content before someone else is faster.
Maybe I could write a MiniReview when I have the time?
Absolutely. We sure would love to read it!
My Exp points, which should be behind my name, I guess, are having a linebreak in front of them. You either need to adjust the top-margin of the score, if you want it to sit beneath the username or you have to get right of this linebreak, which is maybe cause by a too large font?! I'm using Opera 9.24!
BTW: I would love to see some browser usage stats, as I see Opera is mentioned quite often.
> are having a linebreak in front of them
Where exactly? I'm unable to reproduce this with Opera 9.24 on WinXP.
> I would love to see some browser usage stats
There you go:
68% Firefox
51% 2.0.0.8
11% 2.0.0.9
<1% xxxxxx
23% Internet Explorer
16% 7.0
7% 6.0
<1% xxx
8% Opera
3% 9.24
1% 9.50
<1% xxx
1% Safari
<1% 419.3
<1% 523.10
<1% Mozilla
<1% Netscape
<1% Camino
<1% Konqueror
<1% Unknown
<1% Epiphany
<1% Flock
<1% Galeon
<1% OmniWeb
I could publish these every month or so, if enough ppl care.
>> are having a linebreak in front of them
>Where exactly? I'm unable to reproduce this with Opera 9.24 on WinXP.
Don't know what you did or if you did anything, but it's fixed! Maybe it was just the number at this time (115) ?!
The stats are quiet impressive, I love seeing the crumpy IE below 25%, hope to never see it again soon, as adjusting weblayout to the IE6 especially is a pain in the ass. But, I guess, that looks a bit different on other sites with a wider audience, we are quiet some Internetpros here, I think.
All you guys should go Opera, if you don't use it already. It's truely the fastest and best browser (f.e. zoom of webpages works completely different and better). Go 10%. :)
I am delighted by the stats too =)
I love Opera but I don't care if peeps are using FF or Opera, just don't use IE. IE = bad
This may sound like a totally obsolete, or repeatedly asked question but I cannot really find an answer: how do I actually post something in the News section? Do I have to pass a certain amount of EXP? I have seen guys with less EXP than me who were capable of creating their own news articles. I'd like to write an comprehensive coverage of Virtua Fighter 5 for the Xbox 360, if that'd be possible.
Everyone is free to publish, no matter what the EXP count may be. To do so, take a look at the blue box at the top right. Click "Create Content" -> "News" -> and give it a go!
Ow ... I always mis-read it as "Create Account" ... silly me ...
No worries. Nicely done on the first item btw. I love news content you can get your hands on immediately and try out yourself!
About formatting your comments: I like having the freedom to format at bit if I choose so, so please don't change it.
Besides, the used tags are standard BB-Code
You can find a good introduction to it, right here on the site
it's pretty much the same tags wordpress uses
Edit: He accepted all tags here, except the spoiler-tag.
fixed :)
I didn't even know there was a spoiler tag. Thanks for enlightening me :-)
I have a question to Jan & Jörg about reviews.
Should we restrain from writing an own review here if there is already a review for the game on every other game site?
How many days after the game was released would be the deadline for a review?
Is it binding for a review to have screenshots?
And maybe some guidelines about how a review should be structured and written.
I miss the the old design where you were able to preview the news up to the [break]. I can understand the reason for having replaced this for the sake of more headlines on the main page in order to reduce the amount of double posts. But wouldn't it be possible to create such a tool similar to the tag completer? So that if you enter a title, then it checks if there aren't any other similar titles.
Hallo,
a few things:
o Some introduction on what's a good news and what not, conventions how to write them and such things. Things you know how to do it but people who are new to this don't.
o If the news would really be filled up with all the interesting stuff which is happening all over the world then it will rapidly turn into something unreadable. I think it needs some sort of structure instead of just a linear representation.
o I feel kind of depressed when looking at the initial smiley which just looks unhappy towards me.
o I'm happy about the spoiler-tag, some day i'll hopefully use it! :O)
o What system is behind GG soft and hardware wise?
*update*
o And just as i was reading about this in here. Already with my first news i was wondering how to integrate pictures for news. Now i've read that this and others functions are due to how many points you've achieved. I find this kind of an childish approach as i'm not hunting here for points. This should be based on how serious someone is taking this. Measuring this by how many posts someone has done isn't a good solution in my opinion.
Grüßle,
taumel
> Some introduction on what's a good news [...]
Please see http://www.gamersglobal.com/about/how-to-write-news We'll put it in a more prominent place very soon.
> I think it needs some sort of structure instead [...]
You mean the lists or the news itself? Cause I'm aware of the lists usability problem once things start to gear up here.
> What system is behind GG soft and hardware wise?
We're running Drupal on a Dell PowerEdge 2950.
> This should be based on how serious someone is taking this.[...]
True! And it is. We've stated elsewhere, that we're open and ready to take that into account and move ppl, once we see they do take this seriously, to a different role -- no matter what their EXP count is. But GG is a an open wire and we need some kind of control mechanism, of who can do what in this place. It's not supposed to limit you, but to gradually give you more responsibility and capability.
>You mean the lists or the news itself? Cause I'm aware of the lists usability problem once things start to gear up here.
I was talking about the news representation.
>...place. It's not supposed to limit you, but to gradually give you more responsibility and capability.
Okay, i hear you. Personally i already felt limited when i was doing the second News were i also made screenshots for and then didn't knew how to integrate one. But maybe this was only due to i've overseen how to do it for your own post.
> I was talking about the news representation.
Please explain.
oh man. congratulations to the log-in message: "there will be cake if you ..." ;)
You're welcome! :)
If you have any ideas of what else to put there, let me know. If it's suited, I'll add it in.
Quick Question, I was just wondering,
are you planning on separating the platforms at some point?
I don't mind reading a Wii or Playstation News every now and then, but I'm a PC-only-guy for 20+ years now (was 11 when I had my first pc), so I guess it could potentially bother me if the number of news would increase tenfold.
Yeah, it's probably smart to add some kind of filter, if things turn out to get hard to separate. Right now, I kinda like the mix of all those topics.
Also, the "my account" --> track -Feature is really great, I use it a lot and would really loose track otherwise. Would it be possible to implement a link to the tracking directly into the blue box, maybe by just clicking on my username?
I mean, how often do I have to look at my own profile compared to my tracking feature? (not that clicking on my name would currently bring me to my profile, I'm just saying it because that's how it usually works.)
EDIT: no I have no Idea where the "-->" above my comment is coming from, I'm not even sure if it's a bug or a feature.
That "-->" was probably me, messing around with the system. Did add some stuff in the last few hours.
Track: Hmm, I like that idea. Haven't quite come across doing the profiles anyway, so I might add it while I'm on it.
@Jan
If news keep on popping in with this frequency than there is no problem but if there would be more than this will blow up. It then also needs a structure, may it be categories or a different representation (maybe built on a tree structure). Normally you have a couple of sites you check on a daily basis for different purposes like, consoles, pc games, hardware or sites which care about a specific genre like adventures for instance and so on. As far as i've understood you primary want this to be a news site with some reviews from time to time. If it's a news site i only see this working if the amount of news significantly increases as otherwise it's more or less just another one which picks up a few things from here and there for which you won't give up any of the other sources you have as they give you more information. But if it increases a new structure is needed.
Good work on the roles there, although many people would like to add pictures earlier, I guess! Why is this limitation? Are you afraid of anyone adding inproper pics or that it might cause copyright issues?
Why don't use the info from the tagcloud to make a tree like structure where every major tag in the tagcloud is a root with branches for each subcategory and leafs for every news item.
I am aware that it sounds a little crazy, but crazy is sometimes good =)
What about a button for enlarging the text area when writing news?[Just noticed that you can enlarge it by dragging the bottom bar ...]Safari has a neat feature that enables you to not only enlarge the text area in height, but also in width. Would love to see that implemented in Firefox.
Clicking the name for tracking works perfect, thank you very much for implementing this and for actually listening to our suggestions.
Sure thing.
What is the "activity" on your profile for, and how is is measured?
Do I have to log in a couple times a day to bring this up, or add content every day for a couple of weeks?
Currently I'm on "3%" which sounds like I've barely visit this site. Does it maybe have something to do with the fact that I never actually log out? *confused*
I believe it does count logins, because I also never log out, and I'm at 2%. ;)
No I don't think so. I just relogged 5 times (thats more than I have logged in since I registered) and I am still at 4%.
Maybe it has some connection to the EXP.
It takes four factors into account:
(1) the number of logins you do
(2) all page impressions you generate
(3) how much content you've created
(4) how many comments you've written
BUT: This is hugely unbalanced at the moment, cause every one of you is measured against me. I'm at 100% due to the fact, that I've generated most content at the site + comments + logins + PIs.
Still, as I've stated earlier, the profile pages are subject to change.
Ah thx, just wanted to know on what factors this is based on, that answers it.
Since this is subject to change as you stated, this comment might become useless really fast, but as a general feedback I just wanted to point out that it's kinda redundant, since the EXP-Value already measures quite nicely how active a member is. But the usefulness could be increased if the Activity'o'meter would only indicate the activity of, say the last 2 weeks, because it's possible that someone gathered a few hundred EXP but hasn't written anything in the last 2 month.
And as a personal note, I would remove the number of logins as a factor, I haven't had the need to relog in 3 weeks now. Counting PIs sounds much more accurate.
What the hell happend to the track feature?Well it's a live plattform ;)
We do this for load balancing. Most of the time, the site is totally live and fully dynamic. But as soon as we reach a critical number of anonymous visitors, the system switches to reduced mode to keep the load times for all at a reasonable level. It temporarily disables CPU intensive functions such as the Track, Search and others. Once the number of anonymous visitors reduces, all functions go back up again.
Coool
A system that thinks ... Simply fabulous :D.
I cannot make links out of URLs which have parantheses, like this:
[link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitman_(computer_game_series)] Doesn't work [/link]
This ones tricky. I'll look into it. Cheers for pointing it out.
My guess: Look for the lexer or regexp
I thought I've found a workaround
[url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitman_%28computer_game_series%29] Klick me[/url]
but it doesn't take percent either ^^
Yeah, I already tried that as well. Haven't really found a smart way to deal with it so far. I'll look into it again next week.
But that does at least work with the linkifier-plugin for FF, it didn't with brackets.
On another note: The snowman is a nice touch. =)
This is what i got for the email and im not sure what to do. Help please?

Fixed
If there are unread messages here, they get marked as read after you klick on the link, which takes you to page one and when you klick on page two they are no longer marked as "new".
Maybe this could occur on articles if they would reach 2 pages.
Heh, just noticed this myself a minute ago. Appears to be the pagebreak function. I'll add it to my bugfix list.
Yay, a workaround =)
I didn't like the brake into more pages anyway.
Note: If anyone of you gets a note about a Special User Role, please ignore that. Was just messing around with Roles.
:'( And I thought I was special
I am special!
Just wanted to ask, what about giving negative points? I understand it pretty much like ebay, a negative point is really negative, but, appearantly, everyone is handing them out...
Pretty much all negative points are handed out be anonymous users. I presume they think it's funny or are curious about what happens, cause none of them ever gave a reason why he/she downvoted a certain posting -- which I think would help in a way. But that's certainly something we have to think about, so that it adds value to this function.
It should be made clear to the user that this is not about how interesting the article was to him, but about the quality of the article...and frankly I'm not sure if everybody actually can distinguish between the two.
Or maybe I'm the one who got it wrong and it is about interest...
Starkiller, look at the sixth post from the top (replies not counted)
Jan said we should vote as we see fit.
just thought about distinguishing between user votes and anonymous votes. but would be getting complicated I guess...
another Idea that just popped up in my head: change it to "give this autor one point"...
On another note, it pains me to see the number of new posts slowly declining, maybe it would help if you guys would write some kind of mission statement. Currently it's a bit fuzzy what actually is news and what is not. (aleast for me) For Example, I would love to write a Review about "The Witcher", but it's not News in my eyes, it's a review.
Or does it have to be new to be News? Sure, as you stated in the How to write News-Article, a two year old screenshot is not news, but what about recent developments for a two year old title? (as a lously example, the community-patches for Vampire Masquerade).
Just my 2 cents.
We have had some Mini-Reviews already and it seems we all like them (Jörg and Jan too).
I would be pleased to read your review on The Witcher!
Also in my book, recent developments are definatley news, even if they're about tetris ;)
I'd agree with Phlexonance, everything that marginally concerns video games should be posted. Think of John Carmacks rocket... ;)
And as reviews do indeed concern video games, I'd say go ahead and write one.
November 2007 Stats update as promised.
Browsers
Platforms:
Resolution:
yah, Firefox for the win, a browser for the educated :-) (no offense to opera-users, but the add-on feature in firefox simple rocks)
Interesting that nearly every second person still uses a somewhat low resolution like 1280, I switched to 1600 about 10 years ago and to 1920 around 2 years ago.
(24'' can be yours for around 400€, so what's keeping you guys? :-D)
what keeps me, hm maybe that I want to watch movies on my screen, that I want to play games on my screen and that I want to see at least "somewhat" accurate colors when I work on some graphics. A TN-panel can't do this and when I bought my display, the 24" MVA-panels were not cheap.
I dunno what you are whining about, a lot of websites are still "optimized for 800x600", which is really annoying.
1280x1024 is enough, for now ;)
I'm not whining, merely teasing maybe ;-)
About color precision: I do a lot of photoshopping which works quite nicely on my acer display, so I won't let this argument count, but if you say it's enough for you, that is good enough for me.
What type of panel have you got in your display?
I honestly have no idea, I can tell you that is has a response time of 5ms and that the contrast is 1000:1, or that the viewing angle is 160°, but what type of display is used, it's not even written on their own homepage, but maybe you have more luck, it's an Acer AL2416WBsd.
I had those 400€ lying around here somewhere, now where did I put them? Oh, right, I spent them on my 4GBs of RAM. :P
1280 is enough for me, at least until my monitor dies of old age. Then we'll see, there's still some room on my desk. ;)
You spent 400 Euros on Ram? That must be darn fast stuff you have there, a normal DDR2-2GB-Kit costs around 50€ nowadays. A quarter of what you paid.
Nah, I naturally spent them not only on my RAM but also on the rest of the PC - even so, RAM was a bit more expensive in february than it is now. At least the comp will be powerful enough in the next few years, so the investment was worth it, but I'm far too mean to spend such an amount on my PC or peripherals anytime in the near future again.^^
Nothing that you could possible have bought in February will be powerful enough to last a few years :-)
(Assuming that you play more then flash games *g*)
Well, it will definitely last for at least another year, and a year after that I guess I'll still be able to play on low to medium details, so I'll maybe have to upgrade the processor and get another graphics card for SLI, but that'll do for another year or so... at least that's the plan, we'll see how that turns out. ;)
I was thinking about getting a second 8800GTX as well, because the single card doesn't cut it anymore in some games, but the price hasn't changed much since I bought it nearly a year ago, and I assume that the 9er Series will be faster that two 8800GTX in SLI mode.
an 8800GTX is reported to make about 350-450 Gigaflops and rumors say that the 9er Series will get close to 1 Teraflop.
(not to mention the heat and power-consumption of two cards)
So I guess I'll wait until February, when the first benchmarks will come out.
Always waiting for the next best thing was what made my previous PC last as long as it did. ;)
You could make it possible to flag new articles as needing support from admins, like requiring an embedding of a picture or a video.
You could store general logos of games and provide a bb-code tag for it.
eg [gamelogo]Eve[/gamelogo]
That way you won't have to insert a picture yourself about...70% of the time(?)
Thank you for the little snowman :)

any help would be great
The site has become
kind ofreally slow. Are the servers ok?bump
Fixed. Sorry about the delay with holidays and stuff.

thx
What about a see-what-you-get editor for creating the news? Sometimes it is a real hassle to get things straight with all the codes and tags and super-long URLs.
Good idea, btw it's WYSIWYG
Sounds like a great feature, but I guess this would have quite an impact in performance, I usually use the "preview" Button several times, before I Post even a comment here.
Why should it have an impact on performance?
It would be the burden of your browser and he can surely handle this ;)
If the powers that be can create something like that, I won't disapprove. I only know this feature from wordpress, and somehow it made the whole process of entering text a very sluggish experience. But maybe it was just poorly written.
But reformatting html on the fly (without a page reload), always seemed slow.
Well, the WYSIWYG thingy is an issue in itself.
Yes, formatted text is not very easy to maintain.
Yes, it would be a nice thing to have.
No, it wouldn't impact performance that much.
But: There is no convenient solution (for our system) as of now. The main editors are tinymce and fckeditor, which are hard to maintain and output horrible code, that prevents us to keep things tidy and compatible in the long run. Plus, we're working with different input types (BBCode, PHP, HTML, restricted HTML) on the site, which is something we can't cover with one WYSIWYG solution.
Still, it's something we want as well and as soon as something comes along, that will fit our needs, we'll put it in.
Little Question, how long are news open to be commented on? I noticed that very old news from several weeks back, lost the comment-function. I assume this is intentional, just wanted to know the time-window here.
Everything older than three month.
What about proposing themes?
Right now, I found something interesting, but it's already late and I'm not in the mood of working it through and making a good article out of it.
How about a big public TODO list, to which you can add a link + comment and whoever wants to put work into it, can make a good article out of it? (Obviously making an article out of it would yield way more exp than only proposing)
I think, this way there would be more articles on gamersglobal.com, as not always you are in a working mood and have something to post about.
I like that idea. We'll have something similar in the next beta version of GG.
Yaay !
I think when you want to create a new article, it should first take you to the todo list, so you can see if someone has already posted it and if someone has, then maybe there are some more resources for this article.
Also you could see if someone is already working on that article (because he klicked on it in the todo list)
I just noticed that I could access the 'tracking-feature' for other users, simple via their profile, so I can see what they are tracking. Maybe not a big invasion of privacy, but what worries me is that after I clicked on an article it was no longer marked as "new" on their tracking-list. So is it possible to screw this up for someone? Because I rely very heavily on this feature and the ability to see if an article has new comments..
So, if these information are not simple stored in a cookie, and are stored on the server, please check if this is possible.
When I look at http://www.gamersglobal.com/user/starkiller/track I see the items you track, but the status of those (if they have been updated and if there are new replies) applies to my POV.
Don't worry, you can't screw with someones tracker information. Please also mind, that the tracker function doesn't give you any information on what a user is tracking in any usual sense, but gives you an overview of the track he leaves behind: If you post a news/comment, it shows up in the tracker. It doesn't hold any hidden/personal information, since everything was/is made public in the first place.
Thank you for clarifying, I rest easy tonight.
My only worry was that I could miss something. :-)
If possible, the person who wrote a news should not be able to vote on his own news, we already know that he finds it newsworthy, otherwise he wouldn't have written it. It's not a big deal, but since some writers do it, some don't, it's not entirely fair.
and Word on this?
