Feedback, bugs and chat thread
Hey folks! Use this spot to post feedback, report bugs, request support or chat off-topic. We'll try to keep you updated with what's happening at the site and what direction things are taking. But for now, enjoy yourself and take a look around.
- Issue: We do not actively support Internet Explorer 6 or lower. If possible, please use IE 7, Firefox 2+, Opera 9.24+ or the latest Safari Beta.
Bug: Editing comment subtracts EXP
Bug: Menu for unverified users missing
- Bug: Verification e-mail contains placeholders. Temporary Fix: Go to "My Account" -> Edit -> Resend validation e-mail
Editing my own comments causes me to lose XP, which is why I ended up with -2xp right now( 1 for the comment and -3 for 3 edits)
Since I was only trying to improve my comment I don't see why I should be punished for that.
One Typo in above comment, but editing it, would cause me to lose even more.
But as you can see, I love the XP-System, it's doing wonders for tv.com and I'm sure it will excel this site too.
Update: Try again and get back to me.
K, I'll look into it.
works like a charm, that was a nice and quick reaction *bow*
Thank you.
Sure thing. I've also awarded you the the lost EXP back.
hehe can't wait for my first *ding*
Currently I'm thinking about what topic my first article should have...a well...we'll see.
Oh by the way, since this is about feedback, could you put (only very small) the name of the author unter the topic, I'd like to know upfront from whom the article is, currently this information can only be found at the end of the article, so this is somewhat problematic for me with articles that span over multiple pages.
After I read the article at joergspielt today, it was my impression that you're the go-to-guy for that kinda stuff :-)
> the name of the author unter the topic
You mean like for "Special" articles or someplace else? Cause we're redoing the Special section layout anyway. It's a semi solution atm.
Hi, I created my Account a few hours ago. But I made a misstake in the spelling of my email-adress. I worte a "." instead of "-". I tried to correct it directly, but I think it didn't work, since I'm still waiting for my verification-email.
After you changed the mailadress, you should click on the button at the top "resend verification mail" (or something to that extend).
Hope that helps
Thanks for the help. At first I have to say, that the profile-editing-page is pretty hard to find, maybe it's different if your account is activated. I had to log out a few times, before I got there (I think with a little bit luck).
Now the main problem. The email I finaly got was:
"Welcome !username, Feel free to look around and try things out at !site. IMPORTANT: To start posting and editing news, we need you to verify this e-mail address. You may do so by clicking on the following link or copying and pasting it in your browser: Verification: !login_url This is a one-time login, so it can be used only once. If you choose to ignore this verification request, please be aware that we may delete unverified accounts in the future. Kind regards, -- The !site Admins"
as you can see, there are still all dummies in this mail and no link to activate. The mail was also classified as Spam (Hotmail), but I think it's not possible to change that.
I've verified your account manually. Let me know if that does the trick.
On the e-mail placeholder thingy: That's indeed strange. Haven't been able to reproduce this so far, but I'll keep an eye out for it.
Hotmail spam classification: There's nothing we can do about that for now. But thanks for the heads up.
It worked, I'm a verified user now. Thanks for the help
Well, only Jan can tell what's really going on, but go to your profile (blue box top right --> My account) and click again on resending the verification mail, the first one I got, was filled with these dummies as well, but the second one worked.
It's worth a try.
The problem with your solution is (now was :) ), that there is no "My account" in the blue box, if your account isn't verified, anyhow it wasn't in my case...
glad it was solved.
Jan is my hero today :-)
*hugs Starkiller*
:)
Argh ... HUGE logic error on my part. Thanks for bringing the missing menu to my attention! Fixed.
i requested three validation emails now, none contained anything more than the usual placeholders.
Sorry about this. You should be validated now.
thank you for fixing that. :)
Jan, sorry for bugging you so much on my first day here today, but as far as I know, there isn't a forum yet, where users could help each other.
My question has to do with the rss-functionality, I found the feeds for "Top" and "New", but there were none for "Special" Or even the comments.
The idea is, I want to be able to see if anything on the page is changing, because I simply don't have the time to browse to the site frequently, just to check if there is something new (hey, that's what RSS is for *g*)
As always, this is simple a polite request.
Cheers for the input! Most of what you suggest is either currently in dev or already planned:
> there isn't a forum yet, where users could help each other.
True. Let's say, if the community managed news approach manages to work out, we're prepared to take things to a new level. We've got a freaky idea for just that.
> but there were none for "Special" Or even the comments.
Also true. As I've stated a little earlier (I think I should add comment anchors), the Special layout is a temp solution atm. That'll change soon (RSS included).
> I want to be able to see if anything on the page is changing
Again, true :) There'll be a section devoted to just that purpose.
as you see, just wrote my first news. one thing i didn't find out is how to change the Country because it obviously didn't happen in Germany, rather in San Francisco
Nice to see you being part of this, your contribution is very welcome! As far as the Country info is concerned, the intention is to show where you as the reporter come from, not where stuff happened. Most of the news originate from the US anyway, so it's not much of big deal. You are free to add that info to the news itself though.
Why? This way readers are able to grasp, that caring about gaming is a global thing and not limited to certain countries -- hence the name of the site. But we're open to suggestions, if that should change.
ah ok then.
thanks
The site's architecture works great so far. But what troubles me is the design of Gamer's Global. In order to increase the readability of the article and its catchy attractiveness I'd recommend to do a complete design overhaul.
could you point to any specifics what is hindering the readability from your point of view?
Just saying "do it differently" doesn't give the guys much to go on.
just my 2 cents
Good point, Starkiller. I didn't mean to be offensive in any way - I love GamersGlobal (apart from the fact that I just registered here yesterday because of Joerg's blog).
The contents and the 'blog's' architecture, how you post or comment on things, the user panel (especially its Win98 BG color), the achievement system for comments, the preview function, and so forth are all pretty well done. Let me go into more detail and rephrase my small ideas of a design overhaul:

http://www.dreisechzig.net
Oh man, getting Boris would be godlike...good old Doc Bobo...but I guess he would slap me for using the name Starkiller as a nick for nearly 20 years now.
Apart from that it would be nice if the help articles "How it works," and "How to write good news", and so forth, wouldn't be only accessible under "About," but instead be directly presented either in the user's control panel or somewhere else where it's highly accessible [maybe a help panel underneath the user panel?].
Changes to that are already underway.
Hmmm, you do have some points there. I'm rather fond of what you write about not underlining the headlines -- we'll give it a thought.
Still, we've merely started getting things up and running and are currently looking into adding features instead of redoing the design. But hey, it's our first attempt of doing it and things are in flux until the first none-beta version of GG arrives.
PS. I don't think Boris Schneider is up for grabs, as far as journalism is concerned :)
> PS. I don't think Boris Schneider is up for grabs, as far as journalism is concerned :)
Hehe I know, but a guy can dream, right?
I'd just like to listen to his Monkey Island story again ;) ... back then ...
P.S. Apart from the fact that he's a Microsoft employee now, why would he not like to be part of the fabulous GamersGlobal project? Or was that a contradictory question ... His coverages have always been as critical as one can get, but maybe I'm missing a point here ...
Nope, you're not missing any point. I just don't think that he's into gaming journalism anymore. He usually appears to be a busy bee with what he's doing.
If we are talking of Boris Schneider, we have to get Heinrich Lenhardt involved, too. It was the Dynamic Duo of PC Player back in the days...Ahh...how I liked the videos on the CDs (yes, CDs) in that crumpy quality.
Several things (which are imo design mistakes) bug me:
# The index holds too much text which could scare people away. My advice: smaller items (only Title + Thumbnail)
# Its weird and not expectance-compliant that the grey "Hey-pleas-login!"-Box divides the article sections Special and New My advice: bring grey box to top.
# I am missing a chronological list of all articles (mix of all categories). My advice: View a chronological list on the index page.
# If you click Top or New, the Specials column stays in place. Naturally, one would expect to see more information (e.g. larger thumbnails and three times the amount of text) when clicking a category. There would be enough space if there weren't a quasi advertisement for an other category on the right. My advice: If you click a category, show only items from this category and then show about three times as much text as on the current index and maybe a somewhat larger thumbnail.
# If you click a category, you have the page navigation on the bottom. There are the buttons "First" and "Last" but for example "Last" takes you not to the expected chronologically last, thus newest article, instead it takes you to the oldest. My advice would be to change the buttons caption from First -> Latest, Last -> Oldest.
Following minor Bug just occured:
I use Opera 9.24 and GMail, resend the confirmation email, clicked the link and was redirected to the "Access denied" page, but my email is verified anyway.
I got my first level up today to Contributor and the notification
Well, the EXP thing is still up for (heavy) tweaking. We're currently trying to figure, how fast people manage to gain a certain amount of EXP and what appears to be smart to add as function for that. It's a little like balancing a RPG in its Beta stage.
But to give you an outlook: We're going to add functions such as editing other authors news (like Wikipedia), Revision management, adding images, moderating news/comments and some more -- depending on feedback and how things turn out.
Never the less, congratulations on the new role! :)
If you want my input on that, It should take someone quite some time to reach top level, more month then weeks. It just takes time to get accustomed with a new community.
But I would suggest to split the current five(?) Level-system, into a 50 level system, not every level needs new editing right, so you would get new 'skills' every 10 levels, but leveling up alone is still great, it gives you a good sense of progress ("just one more article to get to Level7..." and we all know the 'just one more...'-Feeling)
This way, you hit a new level every few days, but it also makes sure that you're ready when you reach the top level.
additional thoughts on this? Hit reply!
By the way, I'm sure it's already on your list, but with the constant reference to games, and EXP and all, I'd love to see a "Highscore Table" with all the top contributors. So there could be a top 10, and showing that the current user is Nr. 587 on that Highscore, or anything similar, just to get some form of competition going.
As a best case, Competition should increase the overall quality, as a worst case people would start spamming comments and articles, in which case they should be reported.
Obviously, this is not a bug, it's just a suggestion, or "Feedback" if you like.
It's on my to-do list.
Good idea, although I see a really, no, REALLY high amount of spam-danger with taking that step.
with so much authors involved, the system should have some self-healing capabilities, similar to wikipedia, or the system tv.com uses.
Low Level users don't have the power to do much damage, and high level users worked for their level and should be resposible enough to not damage the system (or lose their level as a consequence)
Hi,
I don't know what other users think about that, but for me it's somehow confusing that the enter/index page, which is subtiteld "Top" looks differnt to the page titeld "Top" in the main menu. I suppose your 12 page review of "Hellgate: London" - displayed in the "Top" topic on the enter/index page - is very important for you, but the announcement of this review is also displayed in the "submenu" on the left named "Special". If I click "Top" in the main menu the review of "Hellgate: London" is not mentioned with any single word. I can't explain this in a better way. Sorry for my poor english. If you don't understand what I mean feel free to ask again or simply contact me in german via email.
regards,
HighOPie
Really minor spelling issue: The article on "How to write News" is missing an "-ing" in the last sentence.
"Thank you very much, we're looking forward to reading them!"
just "read" is perfectly alright
I went to the trouble of consulting a dictionary, and that, too, says that the correct term is "to look forward to doing sth", a construction with infinitive isn't mentioned. :P
I looked it up as well, and you're absolutely right, "looking forward to" requires the verb to be in continuous form ('ing).
I didn't know that, so thank you for that.
I still think that "I'm looking forward to start my new job" sounds ok, but grammar isn't on my side this time.
i registered at this new page and now i have to admit that i'm currently pretty clueless - additional help-files explaining the exp-system and stuff wouldn't be *that* bad ;)
