Patrice Desilets on Assassin's Creed & Jade Raymond

"Jade is part of a team!" Jade Raymond and Patrice Desilets

The Canadian Patrice Desilets was one of the first employees of Ubisoft Montreal in 1998, created games like Rainbow Six 3 and holds the Game Developers Choice Award for his Game Design in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. As Creative Director of Assassin’s Creed, he has more impact on the actual game design than Producer Jade Raymond – but she is getting most of the credit. Patrice told us: "People come to me for the real answers! I'm talking about game design, not the PR bullshit!"

GG: Patrice, do you like people calling Assassin’s Creed a “GTA in the desert”?

Patrice Desilets: Comparism is always the best form of flattery, or so they say. And in a way, it is a sandbox game, and because GTA is a sandbox game and has been so successful, it comes to peoples’ minds. Yes, it might seem as a GTA during the crusades and with a historical setting, but no, we do not use the same structure or game mechanics at all. In Assassin’s Creed, you don’t steal horses like you steal cars in GTA, for example, although we have horses, but they work differently. I think Assassin’s Creed is not as “video game-ish” like other titles. The game design is more hidden, it’s more about organic design – using things like in real life, for example. Yes, it’s similar to GTA in some features, but no, it’s Assassin’s Creed. In November, gamers will be able to see the difference.

GG: November 9th is the planned release date for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. What about the PC?

Patrice Desilets: It will be two or three months after, so we could be talking about February 2008. I am sorry!

GG: Will the PC version be different from the console versions? Like opponents being tougher...

Patrice Desilets: The three versions will be the same; the context sensitive actions [which always show on the screen for each main button -- ed.] will be mapped to the keyboard when you don’t use a gamepad on the PC.

Think for a moment. Of course, Patrice (with an 'e') is the "real guy", Jade obviously is a woman. Her last name is Raymond, by the way. But regarding the interview itself: I am not sure Patrice really stated that, why would he do that? They are colleagues, the work on one hell of a game, and they both want it to be successful!

Well, if by "that" you mean his comments on Jade Raymond: I have them on tape, so to speak (actually the interview's recorded in an MPEG-File on my hard drive).

Good interview! Could be longer, though. Is it true that you'll be able to reach the surrounding country side?

There will be a hub called "the Kingdom" which is a big outdoor area linking the three cities Jerusalem, Damscus and Acre. You propably won't be able to reach the mountains seen in the distance in some screenshots, they are -- I think -- just for show.

You can hardly deny that Jade Raymond was a good choice for promoting and producing Assassin's Creed. Of course, I can understand that the rest of the team isn't too fond of her standing in the spotlight all the time. But beware: when the game comes out on November 16 no promotion or beautiful gal will veil the true quality of the game itself. And then, finally, the team will get its reward: happy players (hopefully) ...

I would say that Patrice mustn't be sad, in the last months he had also a lot of interviews with famous websites: GameSpot and Eurogamer ... or joergspielt.de :)

A really nice interview and I loved it to read. Well, yeah, Jade is (imho) hot and good for promotion-things but she also works on Assasin's Creed like anybody other of the Team, didn't she? I don't like these "Pushing" Thing about her, she's just a woman - whatever.

Leonard McCoy, signed.

It would be interesting: If I were to be seated between Patriece and Jade, whith whom would I talk more? So what part in me would be stronger, the gamer or the man? *g*

Patriece says

"I am talking about the game, not the – sorry – PR bullshit."
well that PR bullshit helps paying his salary and it's obviously a good idea to have a hot producer when most of the gamers are male. Just look at games related advertisements, they are full of pictures of women =D
