Last updated on May 16, 2008 - 22:59.
According to developer BioWare, the PC version of Mass Effect has reached Gold status. The singleplayer sci-fi action RPG has been released by Microsoft "exclusively" for the Xbox 360 6 months ago, achieved critical acclaim and impressive sales numbers. The PC version will be available on May 28 in North America and June 6 in Europe, published by EA.

Also, the review version should have arrived today at my door, but it didn't :-(
Are you expecting a localised version? I'd like to know whether the German edition includes English voiceover, but haven't been able to find out anything definitive...
The Xbox 360 version was localized (though very well). The German disk only contained the localized version in German (that's why I bought the UK version). This could change with the PC release though as international versions keep the expenses down.
It's here! The version is fully localized into German, and, from the first glimpse, very well translated / synchronized. Well, exactly the same as the Xbox version, of course. But firing with the mouse is so much more fun than with the Xbox gamepad (and there's a setting in the preference where you can set the target assistance to "low").
Was there an option to install in English?
I'm asking even though I don't expect an answer, now that you're playing ME. ;)
No, there was no option.
hmm, do GG writers get these review versions as well?
I guess I'll have to wait until June.
Well, if they come to the GamersGlobal office, are willing to do slave work for 4 weeks and be chained at their desks all the time... But then, the game will be out anyway :-)
Wait... there's an office?
Of course. Where do you think do I stash the riches those casual MMO Google ads bring me?
Is there a dragon guarding them? :-)
I sense an epic quest unfolding... anyone have a bunch of dwarves and a magic ring handy?
I had it on an envelope over there on the mantelpiece...
My English version was preordered a few weeks ago, I hope the game will be fun.
I'm thinking that going to a store could be less hassle than ordering online, what with the age restricions and all here in Germany. On the other hand, I'm lazy... where did you order from? ;)
I'm always ordering at okaysoft.de, because they have all international versions for normal prices. Before that I used to order at play.com, but it just took way to long to deliver stuff.
Funny thing is, sometimes the English version is even cheaper. The German version for Assassins Creed is 44.90€, but I bought the English Version for 38.90€ :-)
So, I'm not trying to advertise anything here, but I haven't bought a German version for years now and that's where I get my games, legal and fast.
I used to use okaysoft, too, but I've just seen that ME is far cheaper on amazon.co.uk, given the current exchange rate, even if you add the fees for shipping abroad.
It adds up to round about 40 Euros - I've just ordered. :)
let's see who get's his version first :-)
I always order on amazon.co.uk, or even buy it in british shops. I am there quite often...
and the winner is: EbonySoul and Okaysoft.
Seriously, what version did you order? I ordered at Okaysoft as well, but the UK-Version because it should come sooner, but was then delayed to the 6th.
I (obviously^^) ordered the UK version, too, so I guess seeing which one of us gets his version quickest is the real competition here. Amazon predicts 10th to 16th for me... :(
The US-Version, it cost just 1€ more but iam playing since yesterday ;)
I got the UK version for 25 Pounds, It should arrive here in 5 days or something.
I thought as much, at the time I ordered they were supposed to come out the same day :-(
An hour ago I got a mail from okaysoft, that the UK-Version will be further delayed to the 9th, I'm switching now to the US Version, I want to play this on the weekend.
To me, one big let-down is the fighting in Mass Effect which can't quite compete with the rest of the game (story, story-telling, plotting, etc). I'm still rather with Lost Odyssey.

They haven't shipped mine yet. :(
Oh come on. Stop complaining. ;)
I just heard that the shipping of my new pc will last THREE MORE WEEKS.
THREE. That is three times one week. That is 21 days. That is ... quite some hours, that is.
And you are complaining about five more days. Oh come on. :) *g*
I missed the package with my new computer stuff today by 8 minutes. I will get it tomorrow as early as possible. And then the hard work begins :)
Heh. I got my PC within a week after I had ordered, a friend of mine ordered the same model with a different graphics card and had to wait a month... ;)
£26, seriously? Thats only around 32€, you lucky bastard :-)
And I feel your pain, my copy of Mass Effect was delayed from the 1st of June to the 6th, and a few days ago to the 9th.
Well, the pound is low :)
Go get it yourself!
Well, yesterday was the 9th and I got the mail that it's on its way, so I will get it today, so at this point it would be stupid to order it again :-)
Well, Amazon forgot to tell me that they had sent it, but my copy arrived today. Installing right now. :)
damn...
Ok god, I get it, I'm doomed to be the last person on the planet to play this. Will that change my faith, will that stop me from enjoying the game? I think you know the answer.
No, that last person is going to be me. Glad to take that burden away from you. ;)
Don't be so hasty...the game was delivered yesterday, like always I'm not at home at these hours, no problem, that's what family is for (and Christmas), so for every delivery in the last 5 years, it wasn't a problem to leave it next door with my family. I also reached an agreement with that UPS-guy that he will leave packages there, even if it says the package should only be delivered to me personally. (which is very imported for all these USK18 games).
But now that the universe has turned against me, there was of course a new guy for that route, and it's not even worth mentioning that he took thw game with him.
I'm sure the next time I order something the old guy will be back, and he will have never heard of a replacement. The other guy is just hushed away to some witness-protection-program or something...very frustrating. Maybe tomorrow, maybe not. I'm sure they still have some tricks up their sleeves. Something like: I'm sorry sir, but due to terrorism we can't let you into this post-office without our new Deutsche Post identification card."
just as an update, I got my copy 2 days ago, but now I just have no time, yesterday I left the office after midnight, today might be even later, but we have a weekend coming up, I will make time there :-)
So... which planet should I visit next? ;P
I would go for the scientist chick =)
Been there, done that. :D
Well, that's the end of my first playthrough, and seldom was bringing fascism and dictatorship to a galaxy so fulfilling. Also, the music in the credits rocks.
Edit: Now playing as a tree-hugging do-gooder adept - I must say, killing people with my mind is somewhat appealing. Damn those videogames, always promoting violent behaviour.
I'm nice in real life, so I always want to be an asshole in the games ;)
That's a convincing excuse, I'll have to remember that. ;D
It's sometimes hard to be evil, especially when the game is so immersive :/
Yup, I just recently found out that I couldn't possibly follow the way of the closed fist in Jade Empire... But if the game gives you an excuse like the dark side of the force or having to save the universe and/or humanity at all costs, then it works.
And I must say, it's great to finally have a game where you can simply shoot people within the dialogue. Ending the dialogue and having to fight them again (and with replenished health most of the time) always seemed somewhat strange to me.
Yes and I like it!
But sometimes it's strange, like why the hell would I shoot the Asarii who was enslaved by the Thorian?
Because you can, isn't that reason enough?^^
Did you see the countdown at that last part with the Mako, btw? I completely missed that the first time, killed two of the collossi, and then suddenly noticed the blinking red numbers at the bottom of the screen - and the game didn't even autosave before that.
I'm not through yet, so I have no idea what you are talking about (collossi?), but I've had countdowns and I saw the giant letters and the plot also made it kinda obvious that there is going to be a countdown.
I'm also unhappy with the autosave. It shoud be more often and as I find that the combat difficulty variates very much, it's frustrating when you get killed in an ambush and have to replay a large chunk again.
Therefore I started quick saving a lot.
I often oversaw deadly projectiles in big fights with a lot of effects :/
Colossi are the bigger variant of armatures. Without spoiling anything: When your Mako is standing at the top of a sloping decline and a cutscene triggers, you should get ready to ignore all enemies (although it's possible to take at least one of them out in passing :D) and look out for the countdown.
For me, at least, it wasn't at all obvious that there'd be a countdown at that point, because the Mako even stops for the cutscene, so I thought I'd have all the time in the world...^^
I began quicksaving a lot after some stupid biotic threw me over a ledge that was impassable on foot - then I had to shoot all those minions of the Thorian again. But blasting through heaps of zombies with an assault rifle is fun, so I didn't mind having to repeat that all that much.
Now I played through it too.
Nice nice, I'm going to replay it. With a biotic this time.
The achievements really add to replay value!
But I'm insulted that I didn't get the medal for "playing through the majority of the game". I really took my time to walk around, search for sidequests and I did every sidequest I got :(
I didn't get that one either, strangely enough. You should download this checklist to see what you've missed, that helped me find at least one more sidequest until now.
Hey, brilliant, thanks!
I had to laugh when I saw this (http://go.bioware.com/badges//store_me_tshirts/store_me_tshirts_me_170x2...).
The Mako is really ridiculous ^^
Besides from the Mako and the struggle with items, the game is brilliant!
There have been dozens of better item organisation methods in other games and how can a new game not incorporate one of these *headshake*.
What I really missed was a better way to give orders in combat, a tactical top-down view or something similar. I had to defeat the armature on Liara's world all by myself because my companions refused to take cover behind those crates.
I hate the Mako from the bottom of my soul. I like the cannon, but I hate the rest of it.
Yes they sometimes won't listen :(
A top down view would have been very useful.
:D Whe share the opinion of the Mako ^^
The checklist is really helpful for scanning all the systems, buying licenses, medi gel and grenade upgrades.
I won't use it for the sidequests as I've already done so much of them, I'm going to do less on this run.
I was in the Sparta System in the Artemis Tau Cluster and I read "Asteroid Cluster" on the checklist. Hmm, I searched both asteroid belts with my mouse and then "boom" there is the hidden cluster. Omfg! No way I'd have found this without the checklist and that was the only prothean disk that I missed last time :(
The licenses aren't that important anyway. I almost didn't buy anything on my first run. I found pretty decent stuff.
I didn't buy all that much either, only the some of the spectre gear near the end.
But I am doing all the sidequests, I missed lvl 50 by a hairbreadth the first time...
I was only 41 :(
Yeah I didn't bother selling all the stuff either. Turned most of it into omni-gel because I grew tired of playing frogger over and over again.
I wonder why some of my gear never had a full meter.
You get tons of modifications. I sorted them out by their number, as the higher the number, the better the mods are and it would have been just too much work to sort them out by real relevance.
Doesn't matter anyway. Just keep the 10 5s or 6s and throw away the 60-80 lower mods ^^
It's not like you could get a nice feeling of what the mods are doing anyway, because even if they influence one of the 3 visible values of the weapon, the change doesn't show in the weapon's description :(
Also some measily 5 dmg per second don't seem like they hurt.
Most of the sidequests include driving the Mako through steep and jagged mountains for 10-20 mins and then shooting someone in the same 3 generic buildings (mine, underground facility, overground "house").
I prefer searching for keepers in the citadel or doing some UNC quests ^^
I think there were two fantastically flat planets with quests on them... those were great.
Overall, I'd have preferred more of a Kotor-like style. Far less planets, but more activity, quests and all that on those, and none of that exploration stuff. And I really missed the minigames. I kept expecting to be attacked by fighters or something while flying around, I hope they get rid of all those minor irritations in the sequel.
Yes. There is far too much driving around in Mass Effect.
Kotor was better in this aspect.
Is the sequel announced?
Yes, the sequel is announced. Wikipedia thinks it will be released late in 2009, but afaik, the fact that it's being worked on is the only official news until now.^^
Awesome. So I'll keep a savegame of a lvl 60 character, in case we get to use them in the sequel =)
I think I actually read somewhere that one of the developers said something along the lines of "keep your savegames"... ;)
Nice =)
I'm playing on veteran now and it's annoying that the Krogans and Destroyers all run towards my main char and one-hit melee her to death :/
Why can't the fight go on as long as anyone of the group is still alive, just as it does when one of my group members dies.
I think I haven't progressed very deep into ME, I didn't play much longer then 20 hours, and after I left Citadel, I just jumped from planet to planet and did some side-quests.
Quick question here, when you progress further into the game, will new systems become available? Currently I only counted 14 places on my map (e.g. Exodus Cluster), most of them have only one system and usually theres only one planet you can land on, so I hope there is more, right?
There is always only one planet to land on, per system, plus a few surveyable planets. Some new clusters are unlocked later on, and in some known clusters new systems become available.
