City Of Heroes: Make it YOUR Story

Germany —

"City of Heroes" did just turn four years old and is still up and running together with its evil twin "City of Villains", but not only that: NCSoft seem to want to see the game grow much older still, because Lead Designer Matt Miller used the fourth anniversary to give some insight into the company's future plans. As always with such insights, there are still many things left in the dark, but there is one bit which actually isn't:

[O]ne of the things I can talk about is a feature that we are planning. Similar in concept to our character creator, it allows you, the players, to create missions and story arcs for your characters and others to participate in. You'll be able to pick the map, villain group, and objectives, as well as write the dialog and any clues needed for the missions. When you are satisfied with it, you can upload it and have other players across all servers play it and rate it. Fame will come to the players whose stories rate the best overall. It is features like these that we never dreamed of including when we first shipped, but are excited to be able to offer players very soon.

This just sounds like a really coherent approach to a MMO, which is based on heros and villains and had a noticably comical style from the beginning on. It just really seems logical to give the gamers a possibility to build up their own comic book stories and then let them play through them. Of course, it has still to be seen how many possibilities NCSoft will really offer and if this more interactive "City of Heroes/Villains 2.0" has a wide scope or a rather limited one, which could then turn boring after a short time, because the mission structure has never really been the strong side of the game. But then again: Probably there are some really good mission designers in the community and they themselves don't know it yet.

Get your capes ready, retired superheros out there. New missions might soon approach.

It is the perfect plan, you get much more content and the players will create it for you.

I think we will see that more and more often in the future, because developing games, or content for games is getting more and more time-consuming. Maybe in a few years it will be it's own genre of games, where developers merely give the community the tools they need to develop the content. It started many years ago when games came with their own level-designer. Or think about Second Life, people there are creating the content as well, sure it's not really a game per se, but think about Spore, they are going in that direction as well, populating the universe with user created content.
