New feature: What's Hot

New feature: What's Hot

gg_feedback.jpg
Germany —

Apart from enhancing the user profile (see our earlier news), we've added a new item to the top navigation (to the right of the logo) called Hot. This dynamic page shows a tagcloud of the top 100 tags of our site and also the top 10 (most read) articles of today and of "all time". It's not a big feature, but we'd still appreciate if you could tell us if you like it or not.

Also, effective now, only logged in users can use the Vote function -- if you're interested in our reasons, have a look into our latest feedback thread. It was a close run with the alternative "only allow positive votes", and we might yet reconsider, so please don't hesitate to comment on this change.

There was a small error in the Specials start page, which was not listing all specials. We fixed it, but would like to redo the Specials start page somewhen in the future -- comments welcome!

I think it's a nice little feature. But in my opinion the 10 most read articles of today and all time could be of far more interest for most of the visitors than the big tag cloud, so I would probably suggest to move the article-top-ten up and the tag cloud down, so that you see the articles first when you click on "HOT". Or am I the only person out here that's not really interested in tags? ;)

And I think you made the right decision with only letting registered users vote from now on.

I kinda like tag clouds, can't really explain why. I guess it's just another way of browsing a website's content, and there's a little optical information, too. Leave it the way it is.

I think Knurrunkulus is right -- sorry, Claus99. I am changing the Hot page accordingly.

Good call. I didn't see the version with the tags coming first, but the way it is now looks fine.
For some reason I find those flames highly amusing, btw. ;)

So one of the hottest things on this page is Content? Who would have thought :-)
Am I right to assume that this page is somehow linked to the RSS-Feed?

P.S. And thanks again for listening to our suggestions.

I think content is just the main page, without clicking on any news. Am I right, Jörg?

Yes, you are.

Am I the only one with the list of specials moved up and the profile box moved down on the start page? It's a bit irritating, what with the profile being in the usual position on all other pages (or at least when reading a news entry).

No, this was changed today. The number of specials teasered increased from 4 to 5, and now the special teaser box has about the same height as the picture of the First News, so I thought to put both elements side by side. Emphasizing the specials should help with chance visitors, so that they stay for more than the couple of seconds which is normal after coming through google. The new layout is not irreversible, of course.

Might be irritating at first, but I understand the logic behind that.

So do I, but that makes it no less irritating.^^
Imo, the specials were prominent enough below the profile box, and even below the box calling on new users to register. Apart from the strange wandering of the box, it's also subpar from a design point of view, the search box and the one with the profile always seemed to belong together.

In other words: nag, nag, nag!

Jörg could just move the search below the specials as well :-D

Hi Starkiller, I just tried that (quick&dirty), see here: http://www.gamersglobal.com/media/gg_searchform_in_sidebar.jpg ). Even if you'd put both boxes into one, I think it wouldn't look too convincing. Also, while admin-panels sometimes are on the side or at the lower end of a CMS page (e.g. Wordpress), the search form nearly always is on top.

I totally agree, it doesn't look to good. The smiley I used could have been a hint for you that I wasn't convinced it would work to begin with B-)

And thanks for the screenshot, I didn't even know that we had advertisements.
