United States —

id Software announced their next game Rage, at its QuakeCon 2007 get-together in Dallas, Texas. A 50/50 mix of post-apocalyptic style shooter and racing game with slight RPG elements like earning money to pimp your ride -- gamespot.com has more details on the "story". But have a look at the 1:14 min. game trailer:

At the id press conference Todd Hollenshead (Co-Owner & CEO) also revealed, that they had been working for over a year on an island survival horror game, codenamed Darkness, but then decided against it.

id Software further announced that all their games, Doom 3 and back, will be made available via Steam. Doom 3 ($19,95 US) and Commander Keen ($4,95 US) are ready as of now.

John Camrack, co-owner and technical director, also gave his annual speech. Here are a few quotes from the 1:20 hour talk:

[...] somewhat more focused on the PC. Most of the development gets done on the PC. But testing gets done on the Xbox 360. [...]

[...] there's going to be value for at least one more generation in having the best high-tech graphics. And being able to do things that knock peoples socks off. But increasingly that's going to come from money in the development budget and what you do with content [...]

[...] At one point early on at id, I was taking it as a point of pride that we were missing our schedules by 50%. While competitors were missing it by 100%. And I was legitimately proud of that. [...]

[...] we had two exploits that people found, based on the [Quake 3] source code. [...] and the two things that they found were both things that were added after the game was released [...]

A video of his talk is available for download (299.89 MByte) from Quakeunity.com.

There are three additional videos up on gametrailers.com that show John Carmack presenting the new engine technology in detail -- video 1, video 2 and video 3. And a developer walkthrough at shacknews.com. Interesting: Carmack notes, that the level they showed in the presentation took two month to produce.

Just watched the videos 1,2 and 3 where he showed the engine in details, that was fabulous, not it could potentially make game design fast and cheaper, but because it could get easier to make something beautiful, and therefore raising the overall-quality in the industry.
