Interplay Still Kicking... Weakly

Interplay.jpg
United States —

Interplay, once a major publisher of PC games (particularly several classic role-playing games), has been in a state of suspended animation for some time. While the company claims to be operational, and has been actively seeking funding for a Fallout massively multiplayer online game, the company long ago stopped being a major player (and possibly a going concern) with troubles that go back to at least 2002. Today, Interplay reported its financial results for 2007.

For the year, Interplay reported net income of $5.86 million. Virtually all of this income came from the sale of Fallout as an intellectual property. Interplay still hopes to create sequels to some of its past games such as MDK, Earthworm Jim, Descent and Dark Alliance. Interplay claims that it has re-opened its in-house game development studio and is currently hiring developers.

From the company's filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Interplay had four employees as of December 31, 2007, only one of which is classified as a software engineer. The company lists $1.2 million in assets and $3.5 million in liabilities as of December 31, 2007. The company has no forseeable sources of revenue unless it can raise sufficient funds to create new games (or sells more properties to other companies).

sure, they made Earthworm Jim, but comeon, these guys also made Planescape: Torment and my all time favorite Bard's Tale (yes, the one from 1985)

By the way, you can read more about there financial trouble on Wikipedia

It's sad to see them go, but with that skeleton crew, nobody would give them the money for a another project, and definitly not an MMO, these are particularly expensive.

Kicking yes... kicking the bucket!
