EA's Massively In-game Advertising on Xbox 360EA's Massively In-game Advertising on Xbox 360
Last updated on March 19, 2008 - 15:28.
EA is still the world's largest third party games publisher, Massive is owned by Microsoft and might or might not be the most important specialist agency for in-game advertisement, providing the technology and service to let advertisers stream their ads via the internet into games which include the necessary software. Today, both companies have agreed on a multiyear collaboration, targeting especially males aged 18 to 34 (this may be you!). The plan is to feed ads into EA's coming Xbox 360 titles -- as the publisher already did on the PC, for example in Battlefield 2140 or Need for Speed. The company talked specifically about Need for Speed ProStreet and Burnout Paradise and also "the next two iterations of popular EA Sports franchises", including Madden NFL, NBA Live, NASCAR Racing and NHL Hockey. The revenues from in-game advertisement are usually not seen by publishers as a chance to lower prices for the customers, but as needed additional income while development costs for games continue to grow.

i don´t like that development. i guess you can´t stop it from happening...but....well. it´s just way too much. wherever you go, wherever you look, there´s advertisment. some day i´ll just go and live in the wilderness on my own... but till then the stones in the desert will have coca cola written on them...
The first EA game suitable for In-game Advertisment in my eyes was "The Sims", Food from KFC instead of Pizza, Furniture from IKEA and so on. But didn't happen somehow...
It's not a problem for me if it fits the setting, NfS always advertised the cars somehow, even an "Axe" ("Lynx" in GB) Spot while loading would be fine somehow i think, because it fits the "be cool" thing. But what do they want to advertise in BF 2140?
You think Axe is cool? I think you watch to much advertisement already :-)
I can't begin to express how much I am against ingame advertisement, nobody would say anything if Porsche, Jaguar or Nissan is paying a few bucks, if one of their cars is used in a new Need for Speed title, but that's never enough, the name has to be on every loading screen, billboard and tricot.
Maybe I'm too sensitive when it comes to Advertisement, because I don't watch TV anymore, but I haven't bought games for this reason. (e.g. NFS-Most Wanted)
Ads for an electronic retailer in a shooter, or maybe for an energy drink in an RPG is something I just won't tolerate. If they think they're not making enough money, then give me an ad-free version for a few bucks more, or continue to be stupid enough, so I can block the ad-server with my firewall, but I will not ever accept ingame advertisement.
