GDC 08: Games Pioneer Ralph Baer enters Guinness Book of Records

Germany —

Without him, perhaps we all would do something healthy in our spare time instead of sitting in front of PC and video games: Ralph Baer is known as the inventor of the videogame console, his Brown Box was able to simulate Tennis in a very basic way -- you all have heard of Pong, of course. Baer also invented the Light gun. Yesterday evening, he was awarded the "Pioneer" award at the Games Developers Choice Awards at GDC in San Francisco. But he also was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records (see left picture) after a lecture / gaming session with Ataris Pong-Programmer Allan Alcorn (right picture). There was a little problem playing on the Brown Box after all those years. Ralph Baer: "Obviously, my device was not designed for modern flatscreens!", he said (a small part of the graphics could not be seen on the monitor).
