Book 12: The Ashen Wastes, the fourth major content update to the massively multiplayer online game The Lord of the Rings Online from Turbine and Codemasters, is now available in North America and will be released for European gamers tomorrow.

The update continues the quest to save Middle-earth by sending players to rescue Laerdan from Amarthiel, leading them to discover the ring Narchuil that Amarthiel lost at the Battle of Fornost. The expansion adds around 100 quests to the game along with a new region. Players get new items with which to customize the recently introduced player housing and an “Outfit Sytem” that lets players customize their appearance without affecting the stats provided by armor.

Perhaps the most interesting update is a raid called The Delving of Fror. The Lord of the Rings Online allows players to indulge in “Monster Play,” taking on the role of a monster to harass players. The Delving of Fror combines Monster Play with conventional raid mechanics so that the raid is also a Player-vs-Player experience.
