Germany —

Blizzard's fourth international conference, the Worldwide Invitational 08, comes to Europe. The event will take place on June 28th/29th in Paris, in hall 5 of the Porte de Versailles Exposition Center. Why Paris? That's where the worldwide headquarters of Vivendi Games, owner of Blizzard Entertainment, is located.

In order to participate, you need to be at least 16 years old (or bring a parent), be willing to pay 70 Euro for a ticket, and keep a close watch on the WWI 08 website because there is no mentioning yet when the ticket registration will start.

Update: registration has started.
Update: tickets already sold out!

The event is meant for fans of WarCraft, StarCraft and Diablo and will feature a big tournament. Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime promises an "entertaining show for all visitors", although the participants in the tournaments (WoW, WarCraft 3 and StarCraft) will probably get the most for their money.

In addition, the agenda points are:

  1. discussions with Blizzard developers
  2. Blizzard employees giving autographs
  3. test playing WoW: Wrath and StarCraft 2
  4. selling of merchandising goods
  5. an auction
  6. musical program

Last years' WWI in Seoul saw the announcement of StarCraft 2, maybe this year, Blizzard will use the event to announce Diablo 3? That's just us wildly speculating, of course -- what do you think?

If I knew they would announce Diablo3, I would book my hotel room right now. Question is, will the conference be held in English? How was it in Seoul? Because my French is just horrible.

Well, I can't see those American Blizzard employees learn French just for the occasion, so yes, I'd bet that everything important will be in English.

You got a point there.
All I need now is Diablo3 :-)

i don´t think they´ll announce diablo 3 in europe. starcraft made sense in asia, but i guess diablo is (although europe plays it just like in america) bound to happen in north america. just a feeling i have

That's a good point. Also, with Blizzard's usual frequency of announcing stuff, you'd probably expect the next big announcement not before 2009. But you never know..

I don't see Diablo3 happening anytime soon anyway, I would love to play it, but let's face it, Diablo is a fantasy-based (action)RPG, a third installment would need to have a very good multiplayer-mode, or be an MMO to begin with, so a lot of players would have to come out of the WoW-Playerbase. As long as the numbers for WoW are still rising, this is not going to happen. As much as we all love Blizzard, it would be a bad decision, from a financial point of view.

I am not sure, Starkiller. Firstly, Diablo 3 would be "gothic style" fantasy whereas World of WarCraft is "Warhammer/Cartoon style" fantasy. Secondly, Diablo 2 was a hack-and-slay game -- WoW, for all its repetitive combat, is not. So if a fictional Diablo 3 would sport a fast, action-oriented, loot-grabbing multiplayer mode, and WoW would more or less stay the same, Blizzard should be able to retain clear positioning with both franchises.

but nevertheless, they would loose players on WOW.

btw, on this picture you see all the games which blizzard didn't finish

If Diablo3 would be a strict single player experience, I strongly agree with you Jörg, my assumption was that D3 would have a strong multiplayer part. I guess only time will tell.

Just found some interesting detail:
If you visit the Webpage of Blizzard here, you see, as usual, a picture presenting some contemporary issue.
Now, there is the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in Paris. And there you see a Night Elf for Warcraft , a Dark Templar for Starcraft. And behind them, a big guy with a red stone in his forehead, which is, as you may know, Diablos Soulstone...

Just wondering if it really could be a hint, as Jörg guessed...

Or it's just to show Blizzard biggest game franchises ... who knows.

Hmmm, I'm not sure, especially since there were Diablo fans mentioned in the press release. Does anybody know if Diablo multiplayer matches were part of the last Invitational? If not, I'd also say this is sort of a hint.

It just appeared to me as if Diablo would step out of the darkness, whereas the other 2 characters are in bright light already. As if they would reveal it...
but now that is really wild guessing :)
