Ubisoft supposedly released the official, minimal system requirements for the PC version of Assassins Creed. According to the latest reports from various sources, you'll need at least following stuff:

Supported OS: Windows XP / Vista (only)
Processor: Dual core processor 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium D or AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ or better recommended)
RAM: 2 GB (3 GB recommended)
Video Card: 256 MB DirectX 10.0–compliant video card or DirectX 9.0–compliant card with Shader Model 3.0 or higher (512 MB video card recommended) (see supported list)*
Sound Card: DirectX 9.0 or 10.0 compliant sound card (5.1 sound card recommended)
DirectX Version: DirectX 10.0 libraries (included on disc)
DVD-ROM: DVD-ROM dual-layer drive
Hard Drive Space: 12 GB
Peripherals Supported: Keyboard, mouse, optional controller (Xbox 360 Controller for Windows recommended)

*Supported Video Cards at Time of Release:
ATI RADEON X1300-1950 / HD 2000 / 3000 series
NVIDIA GeForce 6600-6800 / 7 / 8 / 9 series

Laptop versions of these cards may work but are NOT supported. These chipsets are the only ones that will run this game.

NOTICE: This game contains technology intended to prevent copying that may conflict with some disc and virtual drives.

Of course, with this, you will need to be persistent to play the game, to have fun with it, you should be a bit higher on the ladder.

that´s pretty insane. i mean, i fulfill what they´re asking, but nevertheless, insane. it does look good, but not better than crysis, does it? and the 3gb ram is ridiculous, not even crysis needed that amount.

This news created quite a fuzz on a lot of different news sites, esp. in the comments section, but seriously, was there ever a time where you could trust the recommended specifications? Usually these get white-washed by marketing and are usually pretty low and everybody knows that you will not be able to actually enjoy the game with this hardware, but sometimes they bypass the marketing and directly ask one of the developers, who is sitting on a state-of-the-art system, who usually names much higher specs.
So what is 'recommended' is totally subjective, and comparing two of these recommendations and conclude that Game A will need a faster Rig than Game B, would be foolish.

I'm sure once the PR-department gets involved they will release much more reasonable specs, and say that the previous specifications were for a non-optimized beta-version.

These system requirements are one reason more to play on consoles. Just put the disk in and play.

I don't have a Xbox 360, but I played the game at the TGS last year on one and it ran quite well, even though it was still an in-dev version.
So I wonder, if the game runs so well on a console such as the XBox 360, why does it need so much horsepower on a PC? Two words: Badly ported!
The game itself is great, but with this kind of system requirements, it shares the fate of Gothic 3 for me: To rest on the shelf until my PC has been upgraded a couple of times.
I really hope that the developers can create a performance patch that gives a serious boost.

I agree. I'm also under the impression that, in case these requirements turn out to be true, PC sales don't play much of an important role. The game did and still does pretty well -- Ubisoft estimates a minimum of five million units in 2007-08. Which, in my opinion, is also due to the fact that they've only released it on closed down systems (PS/Xbox), with a release on an open platform (PC) very far behind.
