Everyone who likes old adventures, like Monkey Island, surely will know ScummVM ("Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion Virtual Machine"). SCUMM was created by Ron Gilbert for (hear, hear) Maniac Mansion in 1987 (the old home computer days), the open-source variant ScummVM replaces the executables of the original games by its own code, therby allowing you to run these great old games on a brand-new PC, mac, handheld or even smartphone. Now, the new version 0.11 (which is rather a version 11.1...) is available. Most important things:
If you ever plan to have a look at these games (again), this will be the easiest way to do it! You will of course need the original games, and be able to transfer their game files to your target device. Look at eBay for the originals... Also, when you scroll down the download page, you will find 3 freeware games that once were full versions: Flight of the Amazon Queen, Lure of the Temptress and Beneath a Steel Sky. Most packages on the download page come with extensive readmes, and mostly they're pretty easy to set up. (The setup process it is not easy at all on the Nintendo DS, by the way, you'll need additional hardware).

As always, you still need a legal copy of the game to be able to play it. Just saying...
SCUMM was a really great tool, it influenced every adventure that came after. Glad we can relive these glorious moments.
well, you need a copy, not neccesarily a legal one?
But this discussion took place elsewhere on GG
Well, I was thinking about that, but decided against it, here's why:
I could have just written that you need a copy of the game to play it, but that is pretty much dictated by common sense, so putting the word legal in there, hinted at that, anything more would be promoting crime. And that's something I won't do, not anymore then I would tell you that you don't need to buy a car to be able to drive one, that you could always steal one.
ok, technically possible, legally not. It is probably the same thing like listening to copied MP3s on your Ipod...
a good way to get the originals are CDs from magazines.
@ joerg:
Monkey Island was on the Gamestar 1/98
Did Gamestar have a copyright for Monkey Island? Or did it "buy" 100.000 units to put them on the CD? How does this work?
+10 EXP :-)
*grab*
thanks!
for picture, editing and so on :)
Holy red hering, I could play Beneath a steel Sky on my Cell...(Win Mobile)? I must get on that right this second....
It's working, hurray!
gratz!
Have fun .... and be vigilant ^^
as far as i know is this still just working with the old firmware version 1.1.1. my ipod touch was delivered with a new one already (and as i don´t want to downgrade it i just took the new one as well). but i think jailbreaking ipod/iphone won´t be necessary much longer, as in february the free sdk will get out anyway

Games magazines' full version deals usually work this way: You buy the licence (which is mostly limited in time) for a certain print run for a given magazine. This licence fee is much lower then you would have to pay by ordering 200.000 or so copies of the game as a reseller. On the other hand, you do your own manufacturing, and you can't give unsold copies back. Some publishers we dealt with at GameStar wanted to participate in above-average sales, as far as I recall, but mostly, it's a one-time fee. For the customer buying the magazine, a full version of course is a real full version. So you could use the game files of Monkey Island to play the game on your iPhone, for example.
And, as far as I know, I may even own a copy from the Internet if I have the CD somewhere in a box?
@ Jan
Thanks for adding a new picture. Is it possible to give an article more than one picture, so one of them is at the top, and if you reload, another one (randomly)?
the next thing he says is "ouch" ;)
Uhm ... no, not randomly. We'll add support for additional images in the next beta though. But I suppose you could add an animated .gif, even though this could get complex with scaling and preparation.
Developers always hate these question (I know, I work with them every day), but is there an ETA for the next beta stage?
We're thinking about May for the next version.
adding pictures is possible for admins only anyway? I am reporter, but can't see how it works
Right now, you can publish pictures when you're an editor (1000 EXP). See http://www.gamersglobal.com/about/prologue :-)
