Rumor: Bioshock 2 to be a Prequel?
With a sequel to Bioshock being as certain as eggs are eggs, it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that rumors are starting to fly around. But first things first: Back in September 2007 Take Two is said to have gently hinted at Bioshock being, what they called, a long-term franchise on a 'roughly 2 year interval. Which is a diplomatic way to express their intentions to squeeze out a new Bioshock every two years. But as long as these are as enjoyable as the initial game, this should be a good thing for gamers.
And according to the latest buzz, they are already at it. Czech gaming site hrej.cz cites an anonymous source from within developer 2k Games, saying that Bioshock 2 is currently in pre-production with a focus on tech and plot. Their report further states, that the story is rumored to take place before the happenings of Bioshock. The sequel/prequel is said to be scheduled for a release in 2009, which would fit Take Two's previously mentioned 2 year interval plan.

Interesting, interesting. I have yet to play through Bioshock 1, though, which somehow landed on my Dropped-But-Will-Look-Later-Into-It games shelf.
I agree, that would be interesting. Maybe you can play in the "original" Rapture. With ordinary citizens, who aren't insane monsters. Or you can see how they slowly become monsters.
I guess you'd see both things if this rumor is true. Which would be a great setting but for one major flaw: Nearly all of Bioshock's story is about what happened to lead to the situation players find themselves in at the start of the game. So the factions are set, what happened is set (sometimes broadly, sometimes very detailed) -- what room is there for big surprises? You might see advertisement for a new creche for little girls or even its building -- and all players of Bioshock would exactly know what will happen to that girls.
It's always a very scary process when normal games become franchises and it's never a good thing for us gamers.
