United States —

On Friday (December 7), Sony Online Entertainment will launch the open beta test for the upcoming massively multiplayer online game Pirates of the Burning Sea. Access to the beta is different for residents of different countries – directions can be found on the official Pirates of the Burning Sea beta page. Sadly, access to the beta in most countries requires registration with country-specific online game sites.

The piratical MMOG is developed by Flying Lab Software and being published on SOE’s Platform Publishing label. Players explore the Caribbean of the year 1720 (with a few tweaks), acting as pirates with access to both ships and buried treasure. The developer has even created a pirate band known as the Rats so that players can begin their MMOG experience by fighting rats.

Took me a while to understand that this is a different title then the Pirates of the Caribbean MMO you reported at the end of October. Having two different Pirate-MMOs come out that close together is quite confusing.
So which one is better? Pirates of the Burning Sea (or PotBS) locks more mature on the first glimpse.

I couldn't say which is better, but Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean is more kid-friendly and will work better on old systems.

So, if you are a PC gamer with a decent machine, I'm betting you would prefer Pirates of the Burning Sea. If you have to meet Capt. Jack Sparrow, then go for Disney's game.
