Deus Ex 3 Engine DetailsDeus Ex 3 Engine Details

Just days after the official announcement of Deus Ex 3, developer Eidos Montreal gives the first details on the technology behind their new title: We chose the Crystal [Dynamics] engine because we plan to help develop this engine more [...] Having that technology from the start gives us a great advantage and foundation for our coders [...] Crystal Dynamics' in-house engine is capable of rendering scenes in very high quality, as they've demonstrated with the Next Generation Content mode in TR:Legend. There are demo videos up on youtube.com, that display some of the eye candy -- skip to 3:55 min on the first one. Publicly available details on Crystal Dynamics' engine are scarce, but here are a few bits on the graphics part: CDC Engine details: With multi-core CPUs gaining popularity and DirectX 10 cards becoming faster and cheaper over the next month and years, it seems safe to presume that Deus Ex 3 will feature top of the class graphics and presentation. Hopefully gameplay won't be left too far behind with so much eye candy around.

I'm always looking for games that give a lot of eye candy and push my rig to the limit, but with this title, a good story and decent gameplay-mechanics will be way more important to me, but if it also looks great, I won't complain :-)
Great job on the story! Wonder why there's near zero documentation on their engine tech, it's a great piece of work.
The engine itself is neither well known, nor highly advanced. TR: Legend didn't look too well at all, even when it was released back then. I hope that they don't make a mistake by betting on the wrong horse, on their in-house engine, which might turn out not too suitable for Deus Ex 3 in the end.
Certainly depends on what you're expecting: As far as framerate/image quality ratio is concerned, their engine delivered good results. The game ran very decent on any kind of hardware/platform (good Shader support as well) and appears to have had very little issues concerning bugs/support -- has two patches (1.1/1.2) out.
The NGC mode is a different thing though. Certain areas of the game didn't turn out that well with the global lighting approach, but others looked fabulous with water-effects, shadows and additional light sources.
