Assassin's Creed: Bugs in PS3 Version (with Videos)

In our interview some weeks before the release, the Creative Director for Assassin's Creed, Patrice Desilets mentioned that they had problems with the memory organization of the PS3 version. Now, the game is out for Xbox 360 and PS3, and the latter version seems to be full of problems:

- After dying, Altair sometimes is "cloned", as you can see in this video (by flugly):

- Guards can get stuck and behave, well, excited. Have a look here (video by kitsunegaijin):

- The game sometimes freezes, as can be seen in this video (by hiryu3):

- Also, overall stability seems to be questionable.

Luckily, as playTM states, Ubisoft has announced a patch for dealing with those problems. Unluckily, patching titles was believed to be part of the PC games world, not the console world. Not any longer, it seems. While patching console games, including Wii Virtual console games, has been around for some time, including Resistance on the PS3, Assassin's Creed is the first AAA title for that console suffering from major problems.

This was only a matter of time and I saw this coming for a while. I knew from the first time that consoles where able to connect to the internet, that developers couldn't resist to save a few bucks in the QA-Department. To be fair, games are also becoming constantly more complex.

Still, I'd think that console players will be much more unforgiving in this respect than the PC audience: The latter is used to changing their hardware, installing new drivers, new XP bug fixes and so on. Console users, so far, are only used to semi-automatic system upgrades.

Not quite. Game updates have always been part of the PS3, and Xbox 360 game launch schedule, and console architecture and has become quite normal to the console audience nowadays. Of course, it is a shame but there is almost no game that hadn't been patched over time for Xbox 360 and PS3.

The major problem that all developers have with the PS3 is the RAM usage, as John Carmack once stated missing 100 MB of RAM for the Quake Wars: Enemy Territory PS3 version. While the PS3 may have as much RAM as the Xbox, 2 x 256 MB, it is the OS, running in the background, that already consumes a good portion of it (about ~100 MB compared to 30 MB for the Xbox). Correct me if I'm wrong.

But has there been a AAA game with as many flaws as Assassin's Creed on the PS3, yet? That's what is happening on the PC all the time: Games like Gothic 3 or The Witcher or countless others that are not really finished and have major flaws when they come out.

What's the definition of an AAA game?
Great videos, I hope when Assassin's Creed comes out for the PC, there will already be fixes for those bugs.
I just can not wrap my mind around the quality assurance issue. How much can it cost to employ a dozen testers? Don't they learn from the faux pas of other publishers who release bugged games?

Hard to tell, as I don't own a PS3 but a 360. It is always difficult for developers and publishers to get their baby out for multiple platforms at the same time. Creed was first and foremost developed for the 360, and then meanwhile, with a delay, ported/adapted to run on the PS3. Overall bad game performance, and the several kinds of freezes for the PS3 version are grave bugs, though. I heard that the PS3 version of Rainbow Six: Vegas (also by UbiSoft) never got patched, even though it suffered from major bugs. The 360 version received several updates, and add-ons, such as new multiplayer maps, game modes, and MP balance tweaks.

My definition of an AAA-title: the publisher's prior game project with an enormous financial support allowing the developers to work on it for several years with a bigger team than usually. Oftentimes, this game receives various advertisement support over other titles of the same publishers too.

One of the funny things I just noticed: Console-Gamers get angry when their game gets a patch, PC-Gamers get angry when their game will not get a patch :-)

Of course they get angry. For a long time one of their arguments why consoles are better than PCs was that their games don't need fixing.
Whatever, I never understood why some people need to argue about the platform they are gaming on...
