Fallout Contest: Grim Reaper Perk winsFallout Contest: Grim Reaper Perk wins

Bethesda has named the winner in their 10th anniversary Fallout perk contest. (At this point, let us remember that it was Interplay who created Fallout 1, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics, Bethesda just bought the IP from nearly defunct Interplay not too long ago.) As described on the Bethesda site, there have been at least 17.000 participants. The task was to invent a new Perk (that's something you can give a Fallout hero at character creation, it's a sort of special attribute, but it can be active or passive. Most perks in the original game are simply hilarious). The winner is Marc-Andre Deslongchamps who invented the Grim Reaper's Sprint. This Perk would give you back all your action points whenever you kill an opponent. But, at least in the old Fallout games, this would make no gameplay sense whatsoever (apart from being a very powerful cheat): Action points are not only used for running, but for shooting, too. So you kill a guy, get back all your APs, kill the next guy, and so on -- where'd be the fun? In Fallout 3, APs will be used for a mix of bullet time and precision aiming, again, this Perk would be huge, game balance chewing bonus. But in reasoning this way, we are of course making the error of taking seriously what is, after all, meant as a big fun contest. The runners-up include Perks like "Falling from Heaven" (a random object hits your opponent), "Crazy Eye" (attackers from the front hit you less often because you're given them the literal Evil Eye). "Money Talks" is interesting, this would give you boni on Charisma, Reputation and Speech skills in relation to your current wealth. The Perk we like best is "Clumsy Mother": Because you mum dropped you on your head repeatedly when you were a child, you'd get a hefty intelligence malus. But, on the bright (yeah) side, headshots won't do any extra damage to you...

Are you sure that the winning perk won't be included in Fallout 3? I am not so sure...
Ahem, the trick with those perks is to balance them, and frankly, the ones I named (with the possible exception of the Money Talks Perk) simply would make the game too hard or too difficult. But let's see how Fallout 3 will turn out :-)
i just checked the Fallout 3 Site for that news and it sayd "will be announced soon". Hmm. I think that Joerg got some connections... :)
As I understood it, the winning perk would be in the game (and so they would choose one they could implement...)
I really can't see how that would work with the winning Perk. They would at least have to cap it so that you could achieve this only once in a while, or that a precision attack using "Grim Reaper" would not be allowed to give rise to another "Grim Reaper".
The kind of humor, the 1950s graphics style, and the character creation system of "Fallout 1+2" are awesome, and so has been this contest. I'd say a "Feel the Fire" perk would be cool: You have a random chance of lighting a cigarette during battle (with a very cool animation, of course, and astonished question marks above all enemies' heads...). Only it's not a cigarette, but a blowgun, and your closest opponent gets an eye-full of glowing ashes or something... *harhar*
I liked my "shrink!" one
"due to mutation you can bacome as big as a rat. cool! But beware of these dogs..."
nah. probably it's just me who thinkts thats funny :)
"Falling from Heaven" sounds like fun. If they implemented that one I would just love to see the opponent being hit by a bowl of petunias or "a very surprised looking sperm whale" even if these two were just a chance of 1 in a billion. Although the whale would probably hit more than 1 opponent.
Hehe, the "Clumsy Mother"-Perk made me laugh.
I could see the "Grim Reaper's Sprint" Perk work, if you could only activate it once a day and would end up exhausted with very few hitpoints left after that, or something similar. Without some kind of limitations it would just be too powerful. Or maybe your to-hit-Bonus drops close to zero while this is active...something like that.
hmm i am confused
on the page it still says
10 years ago the original Fallout was released and forever changed role-playing games. Now it's time for us to review the thousands of entries we've received. Winners will be announced soon.
*wonder*
If you follow the news' link, you should see the winners. I hate suggesting this, but could it be that the page comes from your browser's cache?
Fallout is definitely going to be the better Stalker ;)
