An extremely patient Alex Evans, one of the Media Molecule founders, takes us on an tour through his escapism sandbox, called Little Big Planet. The game is primary a really neat looking, very versatile level editor. The special feature being, that you build the level while you and up to three friends are in it. With just a few menus, you can choose from a number of textures, materials and shapes, then add them to walls, drop them somewhere or mix them all together. All objects move according to physics and are meant to be combined in a seemingly endless ways. And it works like this: Pressing a button brings up the main interface, which consists of no more than four icons – like objects, shapes or the adorably cute character you've chosen. If you pick objects, you'll find a list of about 50 pre-defined items, such as wooden bowls, carrots or marbles. Take anything you like, start drawing something with it and give it a go. Your creation will move, drop or tilt according to the surroundings and physics. If you add a motor, the thing will start to spin and it'll fling your character through the level -- given, it's moving fast enough. This, for example, will enable you to avoid a huge barrier, as long as you, as the level designer, allow such a thing. Otherwise you'd have to create a bowl, give it the attribute fly, jump in and... Little Big Planet is certainly one of the most unconventional game concepts that's currently in the works. And it promises to fascinate players from 5 to 50, as long as they are into creating and making stuff. Just the name is somewhat unfitting, since it reminds us of Little Big Adventure by Adeline Software and has nothing to do with it at all. To which David Reeves (Sony Entertainment Europe) adds: "Is it still called Little Big Planet? We've changed the name so often..."
