Sony Online Entertainment has launched new expansions for both EverQuest and EverQuest II. Both massively multiplayer online game expansions are now available in stores or can be downloaded directly. Long-time players may be excited to learn of the new content included in both expansions, but new players may be interested thanks to the fact that both expansions also come with the original game and all previous expansions. So if you’ve an interest in getting into either EverQuest game, these expansions make a great point of entry.

EverQuest: Secrets of Faydwer is the 14th expansion for the original EverQuest. Most importantly, it increases the character level cap to 80 while also adding 170 alternate advancement abilities to help characters diversify. Furthermore, the expansion adds 15 zones and a lot more high-end content including thousands of new items, hundreds of new spells and 28 raids. More details are available at the official EverQuest site.

EverQuest II: Rise of Kunark adds an entirely new race to EverQuest II. Now, players can try the dragon-like Sarnak, beginning in the new starting area of Timorous Deep. Rise of Kunark also increases the level cap, allowing players to reach adventure and tradeskill levels of 80, while bringing the achievement point cap up to 140. The expansion also adds new zones, new quests, new items and a new mount while also improving aspects of the user interface. More details are available at the official EverQuest II site.

That sounds interesting, I kept my eye on Everquest for a long time now and couldn't decide if I should try it out or not.

Is there anyone with "EQ"-Experience in this community who could tell me if it would possibly be a game that fits to someone who really likes "Guild Wars" and who also used to like "WOW" until he realized that the last one just turned into serious work and into stupidly running around one map for hours just to get a few experience points in awkwardly boring quests that just did not deliver anything new anymore than just, as I said, boring assembly-line work?

Woah, that was a long sentence. So, basically: I would just be happy to hear some opinions about Everquest 1 or/and 2. ;)

If you're interested in trying out EQ2, the game does have have a two-week free trial. If you like the game at the end of that period, you could purchase Rise of Kunark and get all the content so far. The game can be a lot of fun, looks gorgeous and has a lot of depth. At the same time, it brought in enough of the complexity from the original EQ that it is less accessible than a game like WoW. It also offers more complexity for those players who enjoy that.

I wouldn't recommend jumping into EQ as a new player. There's nothing wrong with the game, but if you haven't been part of EQ for a long time, you'll have trouble adjusting to the game and hooking up with other players.

You can start EQ2 now, pick up the the basics of the game and get some help from other players. If you've never played the original EQ, jumping in now is like taking a 10-year-old and dropping him into an advance calculus class. He might figure it out eventually, if he works really hard for a long time.

Thanks for the info. I've just downloaded the trial version (EQ2) and thanks to incredible download speed I will be able to play it after updating for 9 hours. I also think that starting with the old Everquest now would be a bit too late. And: I always hated calculus classes. ;)
