PS3 Sales Rapidly Growing Throughout Europe

PS3 Sales Rapidly Growing Throughout Europe

Germany —

The PS3 price drop announced by Sony about three weeks ago seems to have boosted sales throughout Europe. According to Video Game Chartz the number of sold systems has dramatically gone up since the price drop.

Especially the direct competitor XBOX 360 was outsold largely by the PlayStation 3:

  1. Week ending Oct. 7th (price drop not yet effective):
    PS3 - 37,214 devices / XBOX 360 - 54,419 devices / Quota: 0.7 : 1

  2. Week ending Oct. 14th (price drop effective in this week):
    PS3 - 108,196 devices / XBOX 360 - 47,342 devices / Quota: 2.3 : 1

  3. Week ending Oct. 21th:
    PS3 - 105,948 devices / XBOX 360 - 41,573 devices / Quota: 2.5 : 1

  4. Week ending Oct. 28th:
    PS3 - 73,614 devices / XBOX 360 - 38,212 devices / Quota: 1.9 : 1

Of course, when counting total units sold the XBOX 360 still is way ahead of the PS3 in Europe (XBOX 360 - 3,860,039 devices / PS3 - 1,953,642 devices). But at the current rate of growth of the PS3 sales Sony's device should be able to catch up in the near future.

All figures taken from Video Game Chartz except quotas.

I think it was a rush for the 60gb model. Now nobody has the urge to buy a model with ps2 compatiblity, so the sales figures will stabelize in the next weeks.

I wish you would have included the other relevant systems, your post makes it look like the PS3 was the best-selling system during all those weeks. To complete the statistics here the other stationary systems:

System / 7th / 14th / 21st / 28th
Wii / 52,444 / 99,686 / 138,924 / 142,031
PS2 / 65,458 / 64,737 / 68,025 / 70,057

Unfortunately your last comment doesn't seem to be based on any actual calculations. The PS3 had an advantage of about 53k units sold per week compared to the Xbox 360 during those last three weeks (only 35k in the last week though). At that rate with a current lead of 1.9 million Xbox 360 sold it would take another 36 weeks to catch up. That's still a long way to go and no one knows what will happen in the meantime.

Hydrox, thanks for your clarification. As the conclusion in the news is more a theory than a projection, I've decided not to include your numbers in the news. But everyone reading the news will read your comment, too.

Hydrox, thanks for your comment.

I have not included other systems as I was comparing PS3 and XBOX 306 specifically as stated in the opening sentence of the stats section. PS3 and XBOX 360 are direct competitors in terms of targetted audience.

My last comment wasn't based on calculations, you're right there, thanks for doing the math. Of course, what's still missing would be the fact that the XBOX 360 was available more a year earlier than the PS3. "Catching up" is therefore hard to compute.

I also think that it was a rush for the remaining 60gb models. And I think that Sony won't have long-term success with the desperate attempt to just throw new models of their consoles on the market and to stop producing the earlier models.

I would habe probably bought a 60gb model of the PS3 next year, because I also don't have a PS2 and at the end of next year their might finally be some games on the market that buying a PS3 would be worth the money for.

But if I understood it right this model won't be available next year anymore. And i don't want a model without PS2-Compatibility.
