Sony Launches New PlayStation 2 Bundle

Sony Launches New PlayStation 2 Bundle

SingStarPS2.jpg
United States —

Back in August, Sony announced that it would release a new bundle for the PlayStation 2. This week, the SingStar PlayStation 2 bundle is reaching stores in North America.

The bundle costs just under $150 and includes a slim, white PlayStation 2, a copy of SingStar Pop, and two SingStar microphones. The bundle is designed to attract families and social gamers eager to play the SingStar karaoke-style games.

This fits in nicely with Sony’s plans to bring the Buzz franchise of trivia games that has been available in Europe to North America tomorrow. These games rely on a set of four buzzer controllers that plug into the PlayStation 2 USB port.

I think, that the success of Singstar (also in the last months, when the the PS3 released ) is a clearly argument to produce a PS2 Bundle.

This fits in perfectly with the new tuned-down 40gB PS3s not supporting PS2 games anymore, doesn't it?

It really does. Frankly, it's better to purchase the tuned-down PS3 and a new PS2 (if you don't have one) than to get the more expensive PS3 and hope the games you want to play are backwards-compatible.

A question, though - The SingStar games have been out in Europe longer (and there are more of them than in the US) anyone a big fan? Do you feel that a different population of gamers (more casual gaming folk) are the main SingStar fans?

Honestly said, I'm a console geek; I even had two maracas sets for the Dreamcast's Samba De Amigo music game. But I never really gotten into SingStar, only once. I do think that SingStar is totally Casual Gaming - ever was - in the same way as all other music- or rhythm-based games (Donkey Konga, and the kinds - maybe let's exclude Dance Dance Revolution here) are. The big fan base is and remains the female (casual) gamer.

Leonard, did you see that Samba De Amigo is coming to the Wii? Doesn't look like we'll get new maracas, though - just the Wii Remote/Nunchuk.

I saw that it's going to get ported for Nintendo's Wii. Not a too bad turn by Sega, if you ask me if you consider that it sold rather fine (in Japan), not to speak of the arcade version of it. I do hope, though, that the Nunchuk/Remote version turns out to be more precise than the Dreamcast's maracas controllers, even though the rattling was great - just like real maracas [and that is the point why Donkey Konga didn't really attract the masses, as it weren't real drums after all].
