Dr. Smyth believes that massively multiplayer online games are a different beast than other types of games. In a study published in the October issue of CyberPsychology and Behavior, Dr. Joshua Smyth (from the Department of Psychology at Syracuse University) identified MMORPGs has having both greater risks and greater benefits than other types of games. To perform the study (called "Beyond Self-Selection in Video Game Play: An Experimental Examination of the Consequences of Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game Play”, Smyth randomly assigned games to 100 18-20-year-olds in his study. Some were given arcade games, while others were assigned console, computer or MMOGs to play. After one month of play, Smyth found significant differences in the behaviors of his subjects. After one month, the group assigned to play MMOGs reported playing longer hours, worse health and worse sleep quality. The MMOGs also interfered more with "real-life" socializing and academic work. On the other hand, MMOG players reported enjoying play more, were more interested in continuing to play and reported making new friends through MMOG play. Smyth summarized that "MMORPGs represent a different gaming experience with different consequences than other types of video games and appear to pose both unique risks and benefits from their use."
