Update: Hellgate -- Read the EULA twice

Update: Today, an announcement was made by Flagship Studios on their website about the strange EULA they supplied in the demo version of Hellgate: London (details: see below). Among other things, the announcement states:

We are in no way scanning your computers for your personal information or taking any personal information without your knowledge. The only time that Flagship or Ping0 would collect your personally identifiable information is when you actually decide to give it to us.

You can find the announcement here.

When Jan posted yesterday the demo of Hellgate: London is out I downloaded the file as soon as possible and began to install it. Normally you just click "Accept" when reading the EULA but in case of the demo you have to scroll down the whole text like you have in World of Warcraft. If you do so you will find section 3 Consent to Use of Date and there:
"You agree that EA, its affiliates, and each Related Party may collect, use, store and transmit technical and related information that identifies your computer, including without limitation your Internet Protocol address, operating system, application software and peripheral hardware, that may be gathered periodically to facilitate the provision of software updates, dynamically served content, product support and other services to you, including online play. EA and/or the Related Parties may also use this information in the aggregate and, in a form which does not personally identify you, to improve our products and services and we may share that aggregate data with our third party service providers."

The data collected, used and stored by EA and each Related Party is much more that I want to share and give away. So think twice before accepting the EULA!

And of course it's all gathered to improve the games for the players. ;) Glad, I have no PC at the moment.

Sounds horrible, Information hunger like this is the reason why there will never be an installation of Steam touching my system. They collect information like crazy as well.

In the case of Hellgate London, I really hope that this is only a case of one lawyer overdoing it a bit, because I really would like to play the game and have already ordered it, but not at any price.
