Sony Drops PS3 Price in North America and Introduces 40 GB Model

United States —

Nearly two weeks ago, Sony dropped the price of the PlayStation 3 in Europe and introduced a new 40 GB model there. Finally, the other shoe has dropped. Sony will introduce the 40 GB PlayStation 3 in North America on November 2 and drop the price of the 80 GB model in that region.

As of this morning's announcement, the 80 GB model already on store shelves has been reduced in price to $499. The 40 GB PlayStation 3, like the version available in Europe, features only two USB 2.0 ports, no multi-memory card port and is not backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 titles. It does, however, cost $399 and comes packaged with the Blu-ray version of the film Spider-Man 3.

Sony emphasized that "Consumers looking for backwards compatibility can take advantage of the limited PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility of the 80 GB PS3." Despite that statement, consumers would be better off to hold on to their PlayStation 2 consoles or purchase a new one for just under $130. With the 40 GB model set to become Sony’s PlayStation 3 mainstay, it's unlikely that the company will expand the already limited support for older games on its 80 GB model. So, is an extra 40 GB and a multi-card reader worth $100?

Still too much.

Sony must learn the lesson that people dont want a machine that is obviously a expensive blu ray player that happens to play games.

The reason for the poor selling ratio of PS3 games (that there are not many PS3 title that customers would consider to buy, and the fact that due to that Sony sells much less PS3 than PS2 games) should not be paid by the loyal, new PlayStation 3 customers buying the tuned-down PS3 without the software emulation for PS2 games. Sony ought to learn the lesson to never kid their customers with this little trick. Payday will eventually come ...
