Update: How-To Run Orange Box Games on Linux & Mac OS XUpdate: How-To Run Orange Box Games on Linux & Mac OS X
Last updated on October 24, 2007 - 17:46.
Even though there's no native Linux support for Valve Softwares Orange Box games, a little work and patience appear to do the trick for those who'd love to play the DRM-based titles on a Linux distribution -- like Ubuntu. Wayne over at the fsckin.com weblog has written up a comprehensive step-by-step tutorial on how to get the most recent Source Engine titles like Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2 up and running. The process described consists of three mayor steps and should take you around half an hour to complete. The tutorial also contains a few screenshots to illustrate certain steps and holds a proof of concept video via Youtube.com. If you follow this carefully and fully comply with what is requested, then there will be cake at the end. Update: If you're on Mac OS X machine, CrossOver (around $60) by Codeweavers runs Orange Box games on Mac pretty neatly -- even on a narrow-chested Macbook. Seems like Apple saved a million there.

The cake is a lie ... not :)
The Aperture AI certainly is the main attraction of Portal :)
Well, I can't follow you there, guys. What are you talking about?
The Aperture AI aka. GLaDOS is the announcer in Portal. It guides you trough the different challenges with its uniquely witty comments. Kind of like Shodan in System Shock but ... uh ...totally different. Its main theme being, that there'll be "cake" if you comply and complete all rooms.
But "cake" is also used as kind of a euphemism for burning to death. Hence the expression "the cake is a lie", which can be found written all over walls in semi-hidden areas in some of the later levels. And from here on it gets somewhat more confusing. Haven't yet quite figured what to make of this myself. Anyone?
You mean the orbs/spheres right? The quote I posted above is evidently taken from the cake one. Which, after you deposed of it, turns out to have actually meant cake -- with the death orb still up and running.
Not sure what the folks at Valve are trying to hint at, but it sure is inspiring to see the fanboards full of interpretations and lively discussions about it. Check halflife2.net or boards.ie for more.
As for me, the whole cake thing somehow reminded me of "Die Eier von Satan" by Tool :)
I am giving up, although I've met Shodan...
