3D Realms sort of lives: Always bet on the Duke

Germany —

During the last days one just had no chance at all to avoid news about the closure of 3D Realms and the development stop of Duke Nukem Forever, the game we never really expected to come out anyway. First the gaming community was only mourning over the remains of the Duke, but then the focus shifted on the lawsuit that TakeTwo has by now filed against 3D Realms. And in between all this mess, one question could never be answered: Will the Duke live again?

Well, apparently he at least could. In an official mail by George Broussard it was today clarified that, although the development team of Duke Nukem Forever really had to be laid off due to unsufficient funds, the company 3D Realms will live on and is indeed not closing down. In his own words:

Despite rumors and statements to the contrary, 3D Realms (3DR) has not closed and is not closing. 3DR retains ownership of the Duke Nukem franchise. Due to lack of funding, however, we are saddened to confirm that we let the Duke Nukem Forever (DNF) development team go on May 6th, while we regroup as a company. While 3DR is a much smaller studio now, we will continue to operate as a company and continue to license and co-create games based upon the Duke Nukem franchise.

Broussard also says that the allegations, that TakeTwo is making, are not in any way justifiable and also based on wrong facts. According to him, TakeTwo only provided $2,5 million in funding. TakeTwo however, as described in their lawsuit, claim that they in fact provided $12 million to Duke Nukem Forever. This mudslinging will probably still go on for a while.

But that's just how the Duke rolls. We would really miss him if some day he should decide to really vanish. Apparently, this day has not yet arrived. Now we will have to have patience with his Dukeness. Again.
