Next Round: Sony vs Nintendo

Germany —

The war between Sony and Nintendo has reached the next round. This time, the mobile devices get their share. John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, made some comments on Nintendo´s recent release of their Nintendo DSi.

If Nintendo is really committed to reaching a broader, more diverse audience of gamers beyond the "kids" market that they've always engaged, there isn't much new with the DSi to support that.

Significant gamer demographic groups are being ignored, and there continues to be limited opportunities for games from external publishers to do well on the DSi. Compare that with the PSP platform, where we have many blockbuster franchises from our publishing partners launching this year, representing a wide variety of genres and targeting diverse demographics.

One could now argue that Nintendo is addressing a different market than Sony with its present console generation. The clash between core and casual games is well known, and it results in the huge difference in sold units.

For those keeping score, Nintendo shipped its 100 millionth Nintendo DS unit early last month, while Sony reported that it had shipped 50 million PSP handhelds as of February.

Yes, there´s Chinatown Wars. But there are two or three GTAs available for the PSP, too, right?
