Final Fantasy XIII Needs "Ten Times the Success" of Other Titles

The producer of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIII, Yoshinori Kitase, has stated that the game needs to be a huge success in comparison to other titles.

During his interview with EDGE magazine, he reasons that the game has been in development for five years already, which puts a lot of pressure on the title. However, he also said that this pressure is not going to affect the game in any way.

... there is an unusual sort of pressure on Final Fantasy XIII. I'd say we need this game to have ten times the success of these smaller titles.

But I don't think that means we've compromised in terms of the game design or creativity in any way. Indeed, the development of the game has very much followed in the tradition of the previous titles in the series, welcoming input from the full range of development staff.

This sounds hopeful that fans can expect the usual Final Fantasy quality. At present, Final Fantasy XIII is scheduled for a 2009 release in Japan only. And even there, only the PlayStation 3 version is supposed to hit the market this year. Western territories will have to wait until after April 2010 to get both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 version.
