Age of Conan: Phoenix from the Ashes?Age of Conan: Phoenix from the Ashes?
Last updated on April 5, 2009 - 12:40.
Age of Conan, no matter how promising and hyped it might have been in its first month after having been released, has gone a long way down. While the gameplay was innovative and fun during the first 20 levels, it pretty much changed after that. Quests were broken, PVP was not anywhere close to what had been promised and at the latest after reaching Level 40 gamers encountered a game that was different in every aspect to the game that they had so much enjoyed in the beginning: the grind curve was endless, high-level content nowhere to be seen. So when we reported about the free seven-day-trial that Funcom is now offering for Age of Conan, you might not have been very eager to try it out. That is because after so many months of disappointing news regarding the MMO, the press has not covered it very much anymore. But over at Eurogamer, Rob Fahey has now given Age of Conan a second chance. Reluctantly so, because he did not hold very fond memories of it. But to his surprise, Age of Conan has changed a lot since new game director, Craig Morrison, is in place over at Funcom. If we can believe Fahey's words, it is not an overstatement to say that, with a wagonload of content improvements (most notably the huge zone Ymir's Pass for level 55-65), it has become a highly recommendable game again, even though it is nowhere close to perfect yet and much work still remains. Fahey concludes his article with the following words: [T]he game is finally living up to its early promise. It's intense, entertaining and rewarding to play - and bringing a third character up to the level cap is looking like a pleasure rather than a chore. If it can sustain this rate of improvement - and that is a big "if" - it won't be long before Funcom has one of the best MMOs in the world on its hands. If those words are anything to go by, then one-year-old Age of Conan won't die in childbed, after all. Just in time for its first birthday, the most mature MMO contestant on the market could be off to a new start.

That does sound very interesting. But I think I´d wait for more reports like this, before I try out AoC. It´s just that one good news does not compensate for hundreds of bad news. I stay cautious, but also interested. More user reports (I don´t have the time to do one right now)
