E 74: The New Red Ring of Death?E 74: The New Red Ring of Death?
Last updated on March 23, 2009 - 10:32.
If you know what an Xbox 360 is, you probably heard about the infamous Red Ring of Death at some point. And now that this fatal hardware error era seems over, a new threat arises on the horizon. A growing number of Xbox 360 consoles is experiencing the E74 hardware failure, also known as the Red Light of Death. The assumed issue of E74 is associated with the system´s video output cables and/or hardware scaler chip. The problem involves unusual screen patterns, the appearance of an on-screen error message, and finally a flashing red light in the lower right quadrant of the power ring. If the Xbox is suffering from the failure, all it tells you on-screen is the following:
We do not yet know how many users are actually experiencing this hardware failure, but according to Joystiq, the problem is on the rise. They claim to have received 57 emails from readers with the E74 issue. Joystiq compared the information they received with Google trends statistics and the amount of E74-related searches. The discussion online seems to have increased by leaps and bounds since the release of the New Xbox Experience. At this point, we have no clue whether this issue is a mere coincidence, or if it is indeed spreading. Did you have the E74 issue yet, or know someone who experienced it? If so, please state it in the comments.

No I haven't, but I had the red ring once, and it took Microsoft 6 weeks to repair my console (actually the replaced it entirely). Good luck to whoever gets that new error.
Oh really, 6 weeks? I didn´t expect that. I was discussing the matter with some other people today, and they all said they got it back within 2 weeks!
My system (elite black) got the E74 issue about 6 weeks ago. I sent the system in about 1 week ago and expect it in 2 weeks. For now I an using my back-up system. I did notice that when playing bomberman or battleship (Hasbro Family Game Night) that the backround started to get fuzzy than about a day later BOOM, E74.
