Germany —

According to a new study by the research group NPD reveals that the Xbox 360 is the "console online gaming leader." The study was conducted between January 6-26 of 2009.

Though the Xbox 360 is the most used console for online gaming, it is far behind the PC, which remains the "the most widely used platform for online gaming activities."

The online survey was done in the U.S. only, and involved "just over 20.000" residents. From those, the Xbox 360 accounts for about 50% of consoles played online. The Wii takes about 29% (2008 it was only 18%).

When it comes to all platforms, the PC is used by 87% for online games. Back in 2008, this was still up at 90%. However, the survey seems to include Flash-based casual games.

Other consoles were not specified in the survey, but NPD did make some general remarks about Sony´s consoles:

[The] PS2 fell dramatically and PS3 moved up from fifth place to third place.

The study shows some other interesting aspects. For instance, micro-transaction downloads have slowed in comparison to the previous year. However, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners purchase more downloadable content than on any other systems.

Overall, online gaming on consoles has seen a "statistically significant increase." 25% of those taking part in the survey are planning to play online with a console in 2009. Last year that´s only been 19%.

Methodology

The report is based on online survey responses from just over 20,000 members of NPD's online consumer panel ages 2 and older (respondents age 2-12 were captured via surrogate reporting). Respondents had to personally play video games on a PC, video game system or device used for gaming. In order to qualify as an online gamer, respondents had to use one or more of the following systems to play games online: Nintendo DS/DS Lite handheld system, Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Sony PSP handheld system, Xbox, Xbox 360 or PC. Both online gamers and gamers overall (whether online or offline) were included in the study. The survey data is weighted to represent the U.S. population of individuals ages 2 and older. Fieldwork was conducted from January 6-26, 2009.

Anyone else wondering why they did not specifically include PS3 data? I think that would´ve been the most interesting part in comparison to the Xbox... but whatever.
