BioWare: Hang on to your Mass Effect Saves!

Germany —

The first teaser trailer of BioWare´s anticipated Mass Effect 2 got released last Friday. It hints that protagonist Shepard was killed in action. But seemingly, that´s not necessarily the case.

Shepard's death caused some hysteria on the Mass Effect forums. However, BioWare´s community managers gave some consolation with the following statement.

Hang on to your Mass Effect 1 saves.

This is as good as saying "Shephard´s alive, calm down!" As gamers had to play as Commander Shepard in the first game, this is the only explanation for why they should keep their saves.
The hint on Shepard´s death may be part of a new story line, and maybe a great comeback?

IGN.com asked BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk if the save data would be carried over to the sequel. His reply was that it was "the goal" but that "there are many goals." This does leave room for interpretation. It seems that the story of Mass Effect 2 is not yet certain.

What do you think? Can fans celebrate the return of Commander Shepard? Do you like the idea of keeping your character you leveled up for hours? Let us know in the comments.

Great idea with the saves, too bad that nowadays everyone seems to think it's a good idea to store saves in the My Documents-folders, which I routinely wipe when reinstalling Windows. I'd wager that I'm not the only one who does this, so I very much hope that they have some sort of contingency plan in effect. Being able to select one's decisions at certain points in the story from a menu would work, for instance.

I think the idea is way beyond awesome :D!

Savegame location: I'm using Steam only for Multiplayertitles, but as far as i remember: If a game supports the Steam-Cloud, u can store your savegames on the Steam Servers. Left 4 Dead already stores my configuration files over Steam Cloud (there is are options for this) and it works really well.

I never understood how games store these savegame-information. I always imagine unbelieveable detailed information that has to be stored. With these thoughts i could imagine, that jumping back to a certain point within one savegame would be difficult. Well, if the game would save some kind of history for each savegame - would be nice :)

I think it's the typical Bioware approach: Make your game more interesting by keep gamers specualating. Which is not a "bad" thing per se, of course. If I would have to bet on it, I'd say that Shephard will be there, and if Bioware wants to keep their promise of a Mass Effect saga (instead of just loosely connected episodes), some key decisions (like keeping a certain character alive or not) will be derived from the save games.
