Rumour: New SEGA Console? (Update!)

Germany —

Though this may seem dubious, it is interesting nonetheless. Golem.de reports about the possibility that SEGA is planning to get back into the highly competitive console market.

The impetus for the rumour is that SEGA allegedly trademarked three things, the names Ringedge, Ringwide, and a logo with rings. As SEGA is usually earning its money with arcade machines, these trademarks wouldn´t necessarily mean anything. But it includes video game software, arcade game boards, and, above all, "stand alone video game machines."

SEGA used to be the only real competitor of Nintendo in the 1980s and 1990s. Especially their Mega Drive console and the Sonic franchise were very popular. Their last occurence on the console sector ended in 2001 with the beloved, but unprosperous Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was the first console to feature online playing and its impressive power was very affordable, in contrast to Sony´s Playstation 2, which got released sixteen months later.

Update: SEGA has now uploaded a teaser, which you can find here. It is the so called RINGO Project, which reads "What happens? next_2.24." The 2.24 probably represents February 24, so we hope to get new information then. Keep in mind that we have no idea whatsoever what this is about, though.

I don't think that Sega has the resources to even think about this. By the way, when you secure a trademark, you try to secure it for anything that it could possibly apply to, even in the far future -- that's standard procedure.

Yes, that´s why it´s just a rumour ;) As said in the news, this rumour is very dubious. BUT interesting. That´s why I put it up.
