Xbox 360 Update Killing Xbox 360?

Germany —

Last Tuesday a mandatory Xbox 360 dashboard update was released. Players who want to sign in to Xbox Live have to apply it. Originally, the update was supposed to solve HMDI-related sound issues.

Now some posters on the official Xbox forums claim that the update made their console inoperable. They state that they suffered the infamous "Red Ring of Death" after applying the update.

Microsoft did not give out detailed comments yet. They only stated the following:

We are always taking steps to ensure our customers have the best experience on Xbox 360 and we have a detailed and comprehensive test and acceptance plan for our software updates to the console. If you are having any problems, please visit support.xbox.com so that we can assist you.

Most people guess that the increased amount of system failures is mere coincidence, but others claim that it stems from defective hardware destined to fail. These assumed machinations came up because a considerable amount of affected forum posters are no longer under the protection of the three year warranty against the "Red Ring of Death." They now have to pay for repairs.

It remains to be confirmed if the update is indeed causing the issues. Interestingly, Sony experienced similar issues last summer, when they had to remove a system update that made some Playstation 3s inoperable.
