Perpetual Entertainment has cancelled Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising, a massively multiplayer online game that it announced to the world in early 2005.

Gods & Heroes was going to make players into heroes in an Ancient Rome (around 300 BC) where the gods were active in the affairs of men and mythological creatures wandered the landscape. Aside from its setting, the hook for Gods & Heroes was going to be that each player could command a small army of NPC soldiers.

In late 2004, Perpetual revealed that it is working on a massively multiplayer online game set in the Star Trek universe, and a few short months ago confirmed that the company licensed its technological platform for MMOGs to BioWare (the developer behind Mass Effect) for an unannounced MMOG. Perpetual has decided to focus on those businesses – licensing its technology as middleware and developing Star Trek Online.

Gods & Heroes was in beta testing, but development of the title has been terminated. Chris McKibbin (President and Co-Founder of Perpetual Entertainment) said, "Recently, we took a step back to evaluate the competitive landscape, the game's current state, and the overall goals for our organization. And while we are truly proud of and pleased with what we have created in Gods & Heroes, we also realize that achieving the level of quality and polish that we are committed to will take a significant investment.

"The Perpetual team is faced with a unique challenge of simultaneously developing both Gods & Heroes and Star Trek Online in addition to growing our Online Game Platform business. After assessing all of Perpetual's opportunities, we have made the decision to put the development of Gods & Heroes on indefinite hold."
