EVE Online houses 45.186 players at once; sets record

Germany —

One of the most complex and unforgiving MMO's out there, EVE Online, has recently celebrated its fifth anniversary and can happily conclude that more and more players are sacrificing time in their real life to make a living in New Eden, where the game is set. Recently, 45.186 users were online at the same time. This breaks the old record of over 35.000 concurrent users.

Keeping in mind that World of Warcraft houses over 11 million players by now, this doesn't sound like much. But: Life in New Eden takes place in only one game world (run on several servers), housing over 5000 solar systems. So in this case, those 45.186 were really all inside the same world at the same time. The servers didn't crash in the aftermath of this full house, which is quite clearly an indicator of how stable the hard- and software is that EVE Online is running on.

The developers posted a message afterwards saying "Thank you!" to all subscribers, stating that

[...] it is truly a testament to our loyal fans that 5 years into EVE's existence we are still breaking records and more people are flying in New Eden than ever before. We know we'll be trying to find leftover champagne from New Year's EVE to celebrate. When we do, we'll toast to you!

But New Eden is such a vast universe, there's surely still room for even more people.

Eve Online is a great game but a little bit to complex for me.

Takes too much time, but it is really cool...
