Broken Sword 2.5 out now (for free): George Stobbard needs you

broken sword 5 (1).jpg
Germany —

It has been in development for almost ten years, it has been awaited by many fans of the genre and now it was finally released. It couldn't have come at any better time, because as a matter of fact, the adventure genre is on the rise again. Plus, the game is completely free, so there is really no reason to not try it out. We are of course referring to the release of Broken Sword 2.5, the biggest and most ambitious fan project that the famous adventure series Broken Sword ever inspired.

The latest official Broken Sword games weren't really able to continue the success that Broken Sword and Broken Sword 2 had on the market, one of the reasons being that the modern 3D environment didn't really fit to the series, plus there were some not really clever changes in gameplay as well. Broken Sword 2.5: The Return of the Templars won't suffer under such a modernization, its focus lies on the old and beloved adventure gameplay from the 90's. Even concerning the storyline it can really be seen as a continuation of the first two Broken Sword games.

Once again you are playing as George Stobbard. His father has just died and as if that wasn't bad enough already, George also had to leave his girlfriend Nico for over a year because of a business trip. Soon before his return he suddenly receives a telegram telling him that Nico has suddenly died as well. George immediately takes the first flight to Paris. And this is what happens next:

On his arrival: Rain, storm, like an appropriate divine answer to George's situation. In Nico's apartment the next shock: Nico is alive. Totally bewildered he tells her about the telegram but Nico seems not to be surprised. On the contrary, she asks George to leave the apartment. She does not seem to take delight in the unexpected reunion.

Still sorting his thoughts in the Cafe della Chandelle Verte – where everything began – George hears an alarming story about Nico from Andre Lobineau making the unpleasant thought germinate in him that the Neo-Templars could still exist ...

Although you will meet old and new friends alike and visit many locations from the old games in the series, the team behind the project didn't only recycle everything, all the backgrounds were newly drawn by them. And there are enough new locations as well to make sure you won't get bored. If we can believe the first enthusiastic german reviews, it should take even experts about 5 to 6 hours to play through the game. Much effort has been put into voice acting: the voice of George Stobbard is the same voice that adventure fans still know from the original games. The graphics look really good, not only the environments, but the animations as well: 2D still fits the Broken Sword series best, after all.

You can download the game over several mirrors which are linked to on the official website of the game. You will need to download a package of approximately 700 Mb. You will also find a community on the site and some more information about the team that has worked on this project for so long.

There is no english voice acting yet, due to the fact that the developers are from Germany. But english subtitles are already included. So nothing should stop you from playing the game and understanding its storyline, plus you can improve your German by listening to the characters talking. A version with English voices will follow, but no release date is set for this yet.

Summing up, we can say that 2008 seems to be a very good year for adventure fan projects. Only some months ago, the unofficial successor to the Zak McKracken series came out and was widely applauded, and now George Stobbard continues yet another adventure classic.

A couple of years ago, I played the second part of the series and I really loved this game: story, characters, riddles everything was brilliant.

I like the first part more. Maybe you can find it somewhere on the internet.

After the first few hours, my impressions are:
Good:
- 2D graphics. Looks nice
- Music.

Bad:
- Voice acting and dialogues. Are there two different George Stobbart voices?
- Cutscenes
- Illogical puzzles and triggers (sometimes)
- Many little details. For example, the Union Jack (in the picture of the article) is not correct.

But yes, I have been playing the game for 4 hours now, and it is fun. Everyone should download it.

If it's good enough for 4 hours, that's already an achievement. Many fan-made mods or sequels do not manage to grab your attention for even 1 hour.

I hope it does not sound too critical. The game is, for an fan-made project, extraordinary, and I would even pay 10-15 Euros for it. But I always find all the little things that bother me in a thing that is actually "good"

Wow that scene with the dog and the passangers ... that was rediculous. I agree.
still I think it's easieer than for example the recently released zak mckracken for there are not so many possibilities to combine things (trying something doesn't hurt [okay sometimes it kills you ...] if you are stuck) and all the places you can see most of the things on first sight.

Problem solved. Although it is boring and only for losers, here is a walkthrough.

Say, bolle, don't you have an exam tomorrow? ;)

Two exams, 10 to 12 and 14 to 16. But I think I should pass them with the information I have in my head. And if not I can say that I played computer on the day before. Nothing is worse then failing in an exam after you have learned really hard :)

I just finished the game. It's pretty good, but there are a lot of things I didn't like. Maybe I get around to writing a review...

I think the last location is just weird.
There is no reason why you should do what you have to do before you can do the other thing (without causing the reaction you would cause with the same action without doing the first).

No spoilers up there, but to understand that, you need to play it :)
I hope Vincent understands :)

Well, I'd say it's not a good end for a adventure to xxx a person anyway. But the situation you explained is really wired. In my older post I thought about the whole "world" (characters like Nico or locations like Paris [ Oh, I love it])
