Stargate Worlds: Closed beta nears, better sign up nowStargate Worlds: Closed beta nears, better sign up now

New science-fiction MMO Stargate Worlds goes closed beta soon. If you intend to participate at beta-testing, then I'd say "now or never," as you can still sign up for, and participate at it. Even though FireSky's online game isn't due before next year, the developers already expressed their wish to go open beta prior to the launch of Stargate Worlds. This can only be of advantage, as debugging the game on a wider base of "beta-willing" gamers is by far more productive. Age of Conan also did that--more or less successfully. In an interview held at Leipzig Games Convention FireSky developer Dan Elggren states: Yeah. I want to do that just before launch. To me you've got to have a pretty solid product when you go into open beta. For signing up for the closed beta, please head over to FireSky's StarGate Worlds registration site. Are you still uncertain whether Stargate Worlds will be worth a try? Fear not: it's not only about combat (though for the most part of it). FireSky promises to also serve the more civilized, more Daniel-Jacksonian way of playing, for you'll also be able to "simulate translations, repair and sabotage with mini-games as your buddies battle it out" in the game. And then there's still the hopefully immersive but (surely) galaxy-spinning story.

Whee, Stargate, count me in!
That's a game I would like to try.
I hope we will see it. With the early end of "Stargate Atlantis" und the uncertain future of "Stargate Universe" the Game might fall into the void.
What do you mean with uncertain Future? Last I heard, SG:U should get a movie in early 2009 and the first episodes in Summer 2009.
But here's another thought: I think they are making the same mistake as Star Trek, nearly every nerd and geek loves Star Trek, but they put so many spin-offs so fast after each other, it was just too much, and it all came crashing down with the show Enterprise. They should put a year or two between each spin offs, so people really long for it.
Putting a year in between something is the worst thing you can do. BSG's last season being split in two, for instance, made me more or less completely lose interest in the series. I suppose I'll have a look at it sooner or later, but I don't much care either way.
Continuous supply of new episodes is the way to go, imo.
Let's be hones: Star Trek can't really compare. It was great back in the day, with spaceships and aliens and all that, but it had a few innate flaws that the spin-offs could never really fix. DS9 was essentially the best effort, with the generally much darker tone and, most importantly, weapons that began to make military sense, sort of (e.g. assault rifle-style phasors), but that didn't really cut it.
Enterprise's problem was just (appart from not adhering to the established timeline and techlevel) that it was more of the same. They tried to recreate the original series with a few cosmetic changes and failed miserably, because they kept the do-gooder theme of TNG and Voyager. In Stargate there have been multiple instances of genocide for self-preservation. Replicators, Ori, even the Goa'uld to some extent, to name just the more prominent examples. You just wouldn't find that in ST. And if you did, it'd be in TOS.
That said, I still think an Imperial Star Destroyer could take out the Enterprise E.
;)
To uncertain future: I think the switch to a "Lost in Space" an a Starship theme with younger actors and deep interpersonal relationships drama migt be too much for the fanbase. It sound more like "Lost on Loveboat: Stargate" and "Stargate" without Stargates?
And like Flo said nine months between Pilot and regular airing seems too long. Additionally the overhasty end of "SG: Atlantis" is realy disappointing for a lot of fans.
