Why you shouldn't lose your buddies in Far Cry 2

Why you shouldn't lose your buddies in Far Cry 2

So far Ubisoft has made some interesting design decisions in Far Cry 2: an open, non-static world, Stalker-esque missioning, no HUD, weapon durability, and immersive first-person avatar animations. But none of these aforementioned decisions have been as radical as this one: If one of your buddy NPCs (once unlocked, you can call them for support during a mission) get killed, he will not only be permanently unavailable but also "the content associated with that character is no longer available" to you, states Patrick Redding in an interview with VG247.

If the Far Cry 2 team wants to make the game fully immersive, they really mean it. Far Cry 2 players now really have to pay attention to their NPC friends or else they won't be able to experience the whole game--with all its story- and quest-lines. We don't want to miss out on anything in Far Cry 2, do we?

I don't think that there will be big storylines attached to these NPC's. "the content associated with that character" could also mean that he had some generic weapon to sell that you can't buy anymore, linking the storyline to a redshirt would just be a design flaw.

You're probably right Starkiller, but it always sounds well or special if they say that you'll can lose that character forever or at least for a long time. That makes the relationship between the player and the npcs much stronger if the npcs are authentic.

Since X-Com, I always tried keeping alive every NPC with a name.

I also do that. Although I never played X-Com. I'm just naturally a person caring for people, you know? ;)

That's exactly what I mean. I don't want them to die. I care for them :)

Because of that, Operation Flashpoint made me sad quite a few times

"Seven, target that tank"
"Roger"
Seven runs towards the tank
"Seven, get down"
Seven is hit by the tank
"Shit, Seven is down"

:(
