New Xbox 360 games copied to HDD won't load much faster

Germany —

With the new Fall Update for the Xbox 360, that is most likely slated for November, you gain the possibility to play any Xbox 360 game from your local hard drive. "Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well," promised Microsoft's Major Nelson. But will that really reduce load times noticably? Xbox Germany product manager Boris Schneider-Johne states in a utmost interesting interview with Golem.de that this won't be the case for the majority of 360 games.

We now allow the customer to install games on their hard drive. This is optional, you don't have to do it. But if I do it, these games will load faster because a DVD-drive with seek operation does have load times every now and then. There are prominent examples, for instance: Project Gotham Racing 3, one of the first games for the Xbox 360. There the load times have been very long; those are going to get reduced immensely. Recent games are already optimized; there the gain is relatively small.

Ah good old Doc Bobo. I have to ask, if downloading the game to your hard drive doesn't make it faster, it fills up your hard-drive and you still have to leave the DVD in the drive for authentifikation, why bother at all? Is this dvd-drive really *that* loud?

Nope, I'd say it's about normal. It's also been improved over time by Microsoft.

So the benefit would be rather...limited, right?

For some the possibility to play their games on the Xbox 360's HDD will come in quite handy. The DVD drive does produce noise, but isn't noisier than some other DVD-drives on the market (therefore, it's one of the fastest).

Regarding the load times, especially older titles will make much of a profit here. We have yet to see how that applies to newer titles when the update comes out.

It's KugelBlitz! Yeah i like him, he's not talking trash ...
However a relatively small improvisation is good enough if it is the possible optimun then.
Well, i will intall the games i'm playing anyhow and delete them when i go to the next.
As long it is for free it won't do any harm. And i can test it out for myself if it is benefical.

I don't think anyone stated that he talked trash at all (or ever did). "Kugelblitz" (his Xbox 360 Gamertag) has given one of the most interesting interviews to Golem which is really worth a watch or read (also available as video).

I don't get it ...

The German phrase "$person erzählt keinen Müll" means that that you are in agreement with what was said, "not talking trash" on the other hand just means that it's not complete nonsense in your opinion.

The emphasis is slightly different.

Ummm, if you say so ... I've always been bad at guessing the true intentions of a writer just from a single phrase in the same way as I'm miserable at guessing the true intentions of the designers of an MMO game and how the MMO ought to be played (and when you risk using an exploit and when not).

All i wanted to say was: KugelBlitz is in my opinion a good spokesperson for the x box, because he's really honest and not just pr like.
There would be a bunch of other people who would just say: "Oh all the loadingtimes will be superfast if you load it to HD."
Also, in one of the vids he made for the "Kugelblitz Kanal" on x box he showed around his workingplace and even showed a ps3 wich was standing there.
I imagine fanboys to go complete tilt when they see that *lol*

Yah I guess they would :-)
But everybody knowns: "know thy enemy".

But I'm sure he doesn't see it like that, he is just an incredibility nice guy. I even read his blog, and I don't even own a Xbox.

Well yah, you know him as Kugelblitz, but 15 years ago he was known as Boris "Doc Bobo" Schneider and was also credited as such in old Lucusarts Games.

Wow he's got to be in business for a long time. I never knew him before the "Kugelblitz Kanal" started.

Well, before he became the product-manager for Xbox, he was an editor for several German game magazines and was famous for doing really good translations of LucasArts Games. But I guess his fame never went outside of Germany before he started his Job at Microsoft.

Doc Bobo is a good man!

Load times will be faster, maybe not so much but still - stop whining THAT'S GREAT NEWS.

Also - and to me much more important - the loud spinning noise of the DVD drive will be no more!!!

even though games are optimized better now for games this still leads way for games in the future. Example RAGE. the main issue with this game on the 360 is having the game buffer from the disk, but having the option to install games eliminates that problem so no real issues of textures not loading s they should and less stress on the system..they just need to make it so some games require the HDD to really take advantage of this feature

I have a first generation xbox, and the drive is really loud. produces much of the noise unlike most people think (they think its the fans)

I'll find it interesting to see how much time will be reduced. I can definitely guess that the first few games will have some differences, but newer games might not.

Will this help with games like Lost Odyssey? swapping DVDs isn't fun at all.

Good question. There are no official statements I know that deal with multi-disk games copied to HDD. Fortunately, you only have to swap disks in LO every 15 hours of gameplay (or even more?).

I am not concerned with speed so much as the wear and tear on my DVD drive. I welcome the opportunity to read my disc once in full then pull chunks from the hdd on subsequent plays. I think it's a step in the right direction.

360 may actually be worth it now. i have an xbox and the homebrew is excellent, xbmc is the only reason it ever gets powered up. cracked 360 and a Wii instead of a PS3? i think so... now i may also have a reason to put windows on my intel mac.
