Update 2: We asked the Developer for a Feedback and Alan Dunton from The Multiverse Network replied with the following:

We just announced the game in September. At this time, we aren't sharing anything new. It hasn't been canceled.
So the game is still in the making, the developer is just not sharing any new information at this point in time, we just need to be patient.

Update: Currently the Game is no longer listed on the Upcoming Games site on the Multiverse Homepage. At this point we have no additional information if the game was canceled or not.

The Multiverse Network together with 20th Century Fox announced today that they are working on an MMO in the Buffy Universe.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a TV show that ran from '97 to '03 and has already become part of modern popculture. Little was said about the story, or even about gameplay for this upcoming Buffy Online, but they said:

When the Buffy team finished the television series, they created the perfect launching point for an MMOG where everyone will feel like they’re an important character in the ongoing story.

This is of course a reference to the mass activation of new slayers all over the globe, at the end of season 7. So this could very well overlap with the current season 8, which is the continuation of the Buffy Universe in comic format.
