Halo 3: Mythic to be Bungie's big Halo surprise?Halo 3: Mythic to be Bungie's big Halo surprise?

Apparently, PAX 08 holds some more interesting surprises than the E3 this year on which Microsoft didn't allow Bungie to lose any words over their big, yet-to-be-made Halo announcement. It now seems that the veil of silence might have been lifted a bit. While Bungie has announced and already show-cased the new Halo 3 map Assembly (a purple colored Covenant map), AddictGaming has stumbled upon some new and exquisite Halo stuff straight from the Bungie Booth at PAX. It's been hinted in several videos by Bungie themselves that the fight but not the ride is over yet. With Halo 3: Mythic it seems that an expansion pack of some sort for Bungie's mega popular shooter might be on its way. Having the screen as only proof for this, we can't say too much about Mythic yet. We only know that the screen shows the multiplayer menu but with the campaign mode completely missing. That makes us think that Mythic could be a multiplayer-only expansion. As well, Mythic is game version 1.2 whereas the retail version of Halo 3 is currently at v1.1. According to N4G, Brian Jarrard from Bungie stated that the screen was from a build from Friday that "wasn't really meant to be seen. However, it's really not that exciting, it's gotten kind of blown out of proportion." If that isn't Bungie's big surprise, what is it then?

Nice trick, to show something and then say "it was not really meant to be seen". Good PR...
I cannot understand the hype about Halo, it's just an ordinary (well-made) shooter. There are no innovative gameplay elments or exciting story. Halo just had the advantage to be one of the first good console first person shooters.
There is some truth in what you say, I don't know if you have ever played Halo though. Having never played Halo 1 or 2, I just recently got into Halo 3 on the Xbox 360. The Halo series has set standards for console and PC shooters alike. It was the first FPS that did not have medpacks lying around in the level but that provided the player with a regenerative life bar. Also, you could see your feet for the first time in an FPS in Halo. I didn't understand any story bit of Halo 3, having never played 1 or 2. However, the combative situations that you encounter in Halo 3 were so well set-up and diverse that it simply was a pleasure to play through it all cooperatively (unlike Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 for example).
The innovations for Halo 3 are, to me, much more groundbreaking though, and not only regard the excellent controls in the game. The Forge map editor, and the Theater mode give the players the possibility to share custom game types, modified maps, videos, screenshots, and so on with others in a simple yet effective way. I also think that the clan, party, and matchmaking system is the best & well-thought-out I have ever possibly encountered in an FPS.
