Rumor: Halo 4 in development for next XboxRumor: Halo 4 in development for next Xbox
Last updated on August 27, 2008 - 17:05.
A statement from Randy Pitchford, CEO and president of Gearbox Software, which he made on February 4 this year, has obviously made the people at OXM (Official Xbox Magazine) rather curious. Now, seven months later, they seem to have gotten more information about this from a unnamed source, because their October issue states that Gearbox Software are working on Halo 4 as a launch title for the next Xbox console. This console however has not even been officially announced by now--nor Halo 4. The statement that started all this reads as follows: I’ve started a new project. It’s big. It’s, like, look-at-our-line-up-and-imagine-something-even-bigger kind of big. I’m Directing it myself. I can't mention it publicly yet. When you find out what this is, you'll likely agree that I can't oversell this one. [...] Note - The project won't be completed this year, or the next. It will be in pre-production with a smaller, focused team until after both Brothers in Arms Hell's Highway and Borderlands has shipped. If nothing else, the information does give some insight into just how far ahead we are planning and acting. The hint that Pitchford gave concerning the long development time of his new project is certainly making the OXM rumor sound more believable and surely Halo 4 being a launch title for the successor of the Xbox 360 would be a pretty clever move--with Halo 3 still being one of the greatest successes for the Xbox 360. But wasn't Halo 3 announced to be the third and final game in the series? What do you think? Is this rumor a likely one? And, is it just me or is the lifespan of next-gen consoles getting ever shorter and shorter?

I'm sure it's not the new Halo. A company that develops a Halo game should be in Microsoft's family (like Rare). Gearbox develops multiplatform titles (Brothers in Arms)and they're new games BiA: Hell's Highway, Borderland and Alien: Colonial Marines will be published by Ubisoft, 2k and Sega. No Microsoft!
Small-time company Gearbox and mammoth project Halo 4? Next MS console? The OXM guys really have gone nuts these days (E3, PAX are too much for them).
Well, I wouldn't really call Gearbox a small-time company. But of course: It's a rumor, and as such needs to be questioned.
Ha marketing-speak you gotta love it, saying that you can't possible oversell this, does exactly that already.
As for the life-span of consoles, that they are starting to develop a game that will only come out in a few years, doesn't say anything about the lifespan of current consoles, it just says something, as stated in the quote, about how far ahead they actually do plan these days.
Look at the PS2, it's 'last-gen' but people still buy them, and there are still games coming for it, but the console came out in 2000, so it's in it's 9th year. So I have no doubt in my mind that people will still buy a PS3 or Xbox360 in 2015, regardless of the fact that you could buy a PS4 or Xbox720 since 2011-2012.
