Runic Games: Mythos might stay a mythRunic Games: Mythos might stay a myth

In a recent interview Travis Baldree, president of Runic Games which has recently been formed out of the ashes of Flagship Studios Seattle, outlined the possible future of his new development studio. Flagship Studios Seattle had been working on the online hack'n'slay-MMO Mythos, which was very close to open beta and after that to commercialization when Flagship Studios suddenly had to close down. There were some hopes that now, with Runic Games, development might be finished so that the game can finally see the light of day. But judging from the above mentioned interview, this is rather unlikely. At present, we're proceeding under the assumption that continuing with Mythos won't be possible for us. There are some enormous obstacles to making that a reality. The future of the IP and technology are in question, and in cases like this, as engineers drift away it becomes increasingly difficult to make use of what's come before. We're fortunate enough to have our entire Mythos team on board for Runic - but the good folks from Ping0 who were responsible for the network back-end have begun to find employment elsewhere, so that door really does seem to be closing. One of those enormous obstacles might be Hanbitsoft, who by now own the rights for both Flagship IP's (Hellgate: London, Mythos). But Baldree says that Runic Games nonetheless still do believe in what they wanted to achieve with Mythos and that they are very intent to getting there again. We therefore can expect the new project of Runic Games to be very much inspired by the spirit of their last project (which, according to recent previews, looked promising). This might be a project that will also see a release for next-gen consoles. Baldree and his men are apparently keeping their options open, although their focus is on the PC. So no matter if Mythos is dead or not: its developers are heading for new old shores.
