Gears of War 2: Optional Blood Filter

Have you ever seen Cliff Bleszinski, video game designer at Epic Games, showing off gameplay for the upcoming Gears of War 2? If you have, then you have surely also recognized the flickering in his eyes when he was talking about chainsawing your enemies. Gears of War 2 is going to be a very bloody game, and Bleszinski made that very clear from the beginning on. Which is why the announcement that there will now be an optional blood filter in the game seems like a rather strange move.

This option will replace blood with sparks and it will also remove all the bad language in the game. We have no idea what this will sound like, but we hope it's not like in a talkshow that beeps all the bad words away. Because if Gears of War 2 should be a true succesor to its predecessor, there will be a quite regular usage of the f-word. And of other words, too.

The filter was announced as family-friendly, but to be honest: Gears of War 2 will just not ever be a family-friendly game. Not in ten thousand years. And if someone who is underage should manage to purchase the game, we are somehow pretty sure that this person will also manage not to let the parents know about it. Plus: In the game you will be chainsawing your enemies in half. Will it really matter for the parents if there are sparks or blood while you do this? What's the difference? The violence level stays the same.

If we are honest: We don't really understand this feature, Cliff. No one will use it.

I'd know some religious people who'd make use of it. As well, GoW 1 also had a similar feature with which you could give the gore in the game a different color (green, etc.).

I would think that if religious people are offended by the blood, they will also be offended by the gameplay without the blood.

There is no point in complaining about an option. An option is an option, an its always better to have an option than to not have an option. Simple as that.
