Following the various problems many users were having after installing patch 1.01 and the recently released Bring Down The Sky expansion for Mass Effect, the patch now seems to have been updated to version 1.01a - the only apparent differences being a slightly increased filesize (+ 0.2MB) and an added "a" in the filename.
It's probably safe to assume that one doesn't need 1.01 (it isn't even available on the official site anymore) for 1.01a to work.
