Star Trek Online Confirmed

Germany —

Star Trek Online is alive and kickin'. Cryptic Studios, developers of City of Heroes/City of Villains and the upcoming Champions Online have ended the mysterious countdown on their website at the Comic Con yesterday by officially announcing that they have taken over the development of the MMO from the development studio Perpetual Entertainment, which had to be closed down earlier this year.

By now the new offical website has also been launched, unveiling nine brand new screenshots (one of them can be seen above) and also announcing that the very first gameplay footage will be shown to the public pretty soon at the official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas on August 10. A livestream of this will also be made available.

But: What will Star Trek Online be about? Will we stumble upon Captain Kirk who then gives us simple kill-quests like "Kill ten wild animals on this unclassified planet to secure the balance of nature again"? If this is your worry, then you might want head over to the About Star Trek Online bit on the homepage, which reads like Star Trek Online will not just be a World of Warcraft in space. You will be able to command your own customizable starship as Federation Captain or Klingon Warrior, space battles will be waiting for you just as well as ground missions and you will of course make contact with alien races, discover resources and have a very big game world to explore. But, of course: This is all just theory. We don't know about how well it will be implemented into a consistent MMORPG yet. But, as can be seen on the website as well, the developers seem to know how high the bar is set.

When the opportunity came for Cryptic to obtain the license for Star Trek, we were absolutely thrilled. [..] There are few other fictional backgrounds that fit the MMORPG medium so well. After all, Star Trek was never about a single character, ship or even planet; Star Trek was always about an entire universe. And MMORPGs are uniquely suited to create such a thing and allow players to explore every inch. [...] Admittedly, Star Trek has its challenges. We want to make a game that best captures the real essence of Star Trek. We see Star Trek as much about exploration as combat. As much about the variety of alien civilizations as it is about the core Vulcans, Klingons, Humans, etc. It's going to be an exciting ride over the coming months as we begin to unveil STO. I can't wait.

Let's hope that those are not just empty words and that they will really take their time to develop this project, which is not only set to be released for PC, but for consoles as well. Star Trek has a very eager and large fanbase, and so it probably wouldn't be a very good idea for Cryptic Studios to disappoint them by releasing an unpolished game.

So may the force be with them. Oh, sorry: wrong universe. Beam me up, Scotty.

I don't want to say that Cryptic Studios can't make good MMOs but they take a completely different approach than Perpetual did with Star Trek Online. What's most interesting to me is that the Cryptic Engine powered MMO will also be released for the consoles ... this is really astounding ...

Powered by the Cryptic Engine, Star Trek® Online will be developed for both console and PC formats. With customizable ships and characters from the Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets, ground, space and shipboard gameplay and unique options for player-generated content set in the Star Trek universe, Star Trek Online is the MMOG that allows you to boldly go where no one has gone before!

I guess I'm one of the many fans looking forward to this, but I pray to the Prophets that it's not just another PvP shipwrecking experience.

So the less fights there are in this game, the more I will like it, Star Trek for me, is about Story not action.

So instead of striking everything down with my phaser, I would really like to take a Star Trek Academy Exam at the beginning and later on in the evening talk my way out of a fight with a Nausicaan. If they can deliver that for me, I will pay whatever they ask for.
