E3: EA Sports President Moore on RPG elements, Fifa & Dynamic DNA

E3: EA Sports President Moore on RPG elements, Fifa & Dynamic DNA

Germany —

By chance, we've been the last ones one year ago who interviewed Peter Moore in his old position as head of Microsoft's Gaming venture -- at the time, Xbox 360's "Red Ring of Death" was a major issue. Of course, at this E3 we talked to him again. Moore is now President of EA Sports, one of four self-contained business units of Electronic Arts. Here are some things the FC Liverpool fan (Moore was born in England, but later moved to the US) told us. First we asked about having every one of the 22 players of a soccer match under player control when playing online:

Fifa 2009 will have 10 on 10 -- nobody wants to play as the goalie. But do you know what? This feature sounds great, and we're making it work, but we must take care not to put too much work into a feature that might not be to every gamer's liking. When I played Football [he means soccer], I was a Right Fullback. But I am not sure I want to play as Right Fullback in a video game. Also, what if online games with 10 on 10 will be like under-6-soccer, with all field players jumping at the ball at the same time? So we will offer this feature in Fifa 2009, but we'll have to watch how gamers will react to it.

Moore told us that EA wants to grow from an already big company to a big special company, by having more and more revenues coming from online business models in the next 3 or 5 years. Moore added that the just-announced "Dynamic DNA" is exclusive for NBA Live 2009, but that EA Sports would look into other forms of behavioral updates for players via online for other games. In this line of thought, we asked whether he could imagine an MMO experience for EA Sports titles, including a cross-title avatar.

I'm interested in the RPG elements of sports games. At the moment, you take control of a player when he leaves the tunnel. But in the real world, he has a life outside of the stadium, in which the public is also very interested. We are looking into possibilities of having RPG/MMO elements in our sports games. You could leave the field, enter the locker room, visit a night club. Your athlete could be in a Tennis match, then play alongside Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United, then box against Mike Tyson. But we have to be careful. Maybe our customers will say: "I do not want to do that, all I want is play in the stadium." Also, when I'm into Basketball, do I really want to play a boxing game?

Shortly after he joined EA Sports in September 2008, Moore had talked about EA Sports' titles not being "international" enough, and that they would need to look into new sports genres. Now he added that it's easier for EA Sports in the US, where they can cover the major leagues, but that there is no major second League after Football in Europe. Moore went on to say that at E3 2008, EA Sports wanted to concentrate on the North American market. Some big announcements regarding new sports titles, he added, will be made at Games Convention in Leipzig (August 20 - 23).

So let's have a guess what sport genres could be announced: Wimbledon 2010? Rugby 2011? International Polo 2012? We will see...

That's just great, paying for every status update or new team member. I am so looking forward to it. What a bullshit!!!

Buy this new Adidas shoe for +3% speed, or the Nike for +2% shot accuracy.

Oh, yes, I can well imagine that

I think the updating with real-world information could really be a treat. As long as we don't end up paying double for the game plus this kind of service. EA should price something like this like they now price a normal retail game, with a one-year subscription included.
